AUSTIN, Tex. (8/26/16) – Junior midfielder
Suzie Redick assisted and scored on two second-half markers to power the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Sam Houston State University on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
The Titans looked sharp early, but couldn't find the back of the net and went into the break trailing 1-0 on a Bearkats goal late in the first half.
Detroit Mercy regrouped at the break and came out firing in the second frame. The Titans outshot Sam Houston State 14-3 in the half and tied the game in the 70th minute as Redick led a breakaway and found senior
Anna Mindling from the right wing for the equalizer.
Senior
Carley Rice found Redick with a through ball up the left side moments later, with Redick burying the eventual game-winner from 15 yards out as the Titans went ahead 2-1 in the 81st minute.
Detroit Mercy finished the match with advantages in shots (19-10), shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (4-3).
Redick tallied a goal and an assist, while Mindling tallied a goal on five shots, three of which came on net.
Juniors
Rachel DeLuca and
Phylisha Drayton, along with freshman
Casey Couturier, each tallied multiple shots in the win.
Junior
Marina Manzo played all 90 minutes in goal and picked up the win after making three saves.
The Titans moved to 1-1 with the victory, while Sam Houston State fell to 0-3. The match was the first-ever meeting between the squads.
Detroit Mercy continues the road trip on Sunday, Aug. 28, against Texas. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. EST and will broadcast live on the Longhorn Network and ESPN3.
