Titans Fall to Spartans in East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich. (9/11/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Michigan State Spartans on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon from DeMartin Soccer Stadium.

The Spartans struck first in the 21st minute as a cross into the box deflected through traffic and found the foot of Hannah Jones for the first score of the match. Jamie Cheslik capped the scoring in the 70th minute after chasing down a through ball and taking one touch around the goalkeeper for the tap-in insurance goal.

The Titans fought back from a sluggish first half to rip five shots in the second half and were threatening the Spartans lead throughout the frame. Junior Phylisha Drayton led the team with a pair of shots on goal, while Carley Rice, Carly Fiorido and Suzie Redick all tallied a shot in the defeat.

Junior goalkeeper Marina Manzo was saddled with the loss after allowing two goals on three saves.

The Titans drop to 2-5 with the loss, while Michigan State improves to 3-3-1.

Detroit Mercy continues its road swing this week with their Horizon League opener on Friday at Wright State. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. from Dayton, Ohio.
