YPSILANTI, Mich. (9/18/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team completed a 2-1 comeback win in overtime at Eastern Michigan University on Sunday afternoon after getting goals from its two senior captains in the second half and overtime.
Trailing 1-0 late in the second,
Anna Mindling tallied her fifth goal of the season to knot the game in the 76
th minute. The equalizer took the game to overtime, where junior
Rachel DeLuca sent a free kick into the box and found senior
Kristen Tobin, who headed the game-winner into the net in the 94
th minute.
The match was a back-and-forth affair, especially in the second half as the two squads combined for 17 shots in the frame.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Hirschmann made her first career start in net and picked up the win while turning away four shots on 12 total shots faced.
Sophomore
Carly Fiorido led the Titans with four shots, two of which came on net. Junior
Suzie Redick added a pair of shots, followed by Mindling, Tobin,
Molly Kane and
Veronica Kramer with one apiece.
Eastern Michigan held a 12-10 edge in shots and 4-2 lead in corners, while the Titans posted a 7-5 advantage in shots on net.
With the win, Detroit Mercy evened the all-time series with EMU at 8-8-4. The Titans have now won four of the last five against the Eagles.
The Titans moved to 3-5-1 on the season with the victory as the Eagles fell to 2-4-1.
Detroit Mercy returns to Titan Field on Wednesday, Sept. 21 for a non-conference matchup with Madonna. The tilt is set to begin at 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3. The match will be scarf day for the Titans, with the first 100 fans in attendance receiving free scarves featuring Detroit Mercy's new logos.
