DETROIT (9/28/16) – Senior
Carley Rice tallied five points on two goals and an assist to power the University of Detroit Mercy past Youngstown State, 5-1, on a wet Wednesday afternoon from Titan Field.
Five Titans recorded points in the match, with four more recording shots in the game. Rice highlighted the offensive barrage with a career-high five points, while classmate
Anna Mindling added her eighth goal of the season and added an assist. Junior
Rachel DeLuca also added a goal and an assist, with
Phylisha Drayton tallying a marker of her own. Sophomore
Molly Kane recorded an assist to cap the scoring for Detroit Mercy.
The match, which was hosted along with the Karmanos Cancer Institute as the annual Pink Game, was all Titans from the start. Detroit Mercy recorded the first seven shots in the game and finally broke through in the 20
th minute after Rice was tackled in the box to earn a penalty kick. DeLuca stepped in and slipped the PK in for her second goal in as many games.
Rice tallied her first goal of the season just moments later as Mindling swung a cross to Kane, who then flicked the ball to Rice for a tic-tac-toe goal to go up 2-0 in the 23
rd minute. Drayton pushed the lead to 3-0 after a headed pass from Rice put her in one-on-one against the YSU keeper in the 27
th minute.
After halftime, Rice wasted little time getting back in the scoring column, burying a feed from DeLuca less than a minute into the second stanza. Mindling continued her torrid play with her eighth goal of the season in the 79
th minute, blasting a look from outside the box past the outstretched arms of the YSU keeper.
Youngstown State got on the board in the final seconds of the match as Marissa Martin scored off a pass from Ernestina Abambila in the 90
th minute to ruin the clean sheet for Detroit Mercy.
Junior
Marina Manzo earned the win after turning away six shots to improve to 5-5-1 on the season.
Mindling continues to shine in her final campaign and now has eight goals on the season, including a marker in each of the last four matches – all of which have been Titan wins.
In the first half alone, Detroit Mercy outshot the Penguins 13-3 and earned 12 corner kicks to the visitor's one. The Titans finished the match with advantages of 19-9 in total shots, 13-8 in shots on goal and 15-4 in corner kicks.
The win pushes Detroit Mercy's win streak to four and makes the squad unbeaten in their last five matches at 4-0-1. The streak is the longest for Detroit Mercy since 2014 when the Titans reeled off five wins in a row. The Titans now lead the all-time series with Youngstown State, 17-1. The five goals are the most Detroit Mercy has scored since also tallying five in a 5-0 win over Green Bay last fall.
The victory improves the Titans' Horizon League record to 2-0-1 and into a tie for first place in the conference. It also sets up a showdown with second-place Milwaukee on Saturday, Oct. 1. The match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. from Titan Field and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
