CINCINNATI, Ohio (10/3/2017) -- John Kingman's second-half goal helped lead a University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer comeback on the road Tuesday night at Xavier, but the Titans ultimately fell to the Musketeers by a 3-1 margin.
Kingman, playing in just his third career game for the Titans (5-4-2), ripped a shot from the top of the box on a rebound attempt that curved inside the post. His first collegiate goal cut the Xavier lead to 2-1 in the 66th minute of the contest. Sophomore defender
Garret Weaver assisted on the goal.
The Musketeers (7-2-2) led 2-0 after 45 minutes after scoring goals in the 3rd and 39th minutes in the first half. Detroit Mercy pressured the net often in the second half and had several scoring chances, out-shooting Xavier in the final 45 minutes, 7-5.
The Titans' comeback effort was strong all the way through the final minute with Xavier scoring its third goal on a counter attack with just one second left on the clock. Xavier finished the game with a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. Detroit Mercy had five corner kicks, one of them directly leading to Kingman's goal.
Freshman
Daniel Iyok led the team in shots with two, including one just over the crossbar early in the second half. Senior
Tyler Hughes also had a look on net in the 71st minute, but Xavier was able to turn it away.
Junior goalkeeper
Josh Flamme made his second start of the season in net, turning away five shots for the Titans.
Detroit Mercy closed out a three-game road trip in Ohio and a stretch of six of seven away from Detroit. The Titans have six matches left in the regular season -- three at home and three on the road. Five of the six contests are Horizon League matches.
