DETROIT (10/7/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team did not have luck on its side on Saturday as the Titans dropped a 3-0 contest to visiting UIC.
Detroit Mercy (3-10-1, 0-5-0 HL) outshot UIC (4-11-0, 2-3-0 HL), 15-12, but two of those attempts hit the crossbar and five were stopped by the Flames' goalie in the game.
Junior
Marina Manzo made three saves in net and senior
Rachel DeLuca had a team-high eight shots.
The Titans will have a week of preparation before they return to action with a road game at Cleveland State on Saturday, Oct. 14.
First Half
- The Titans looked liked they had some good looks early as DeLuca had a shot sail high and one that was saved in the first seven minutes.
- Manzo then recorded a save at 9:50, but two minutes later, the Flames got on the board.
- DeLuca hit the crossbar in the 20th minute and redshirt junior Caitlin Carroll had a shot blocked inside the box in the 26th minute.
- Freshman Kelli Doyle had a chance to tie it up at 31:04, but her shot also hit the crossbar.
- Freshman Neteya Tavernier put a boot on the ball that was blocked at 38:48 and then Doyle rebounded the shot and put one of her own up that was saved.
Second Half
- Manzo made her second save early in the period.
- Junior Carly Fiorido attempted a shot that sailed wide in the 50th minute.
- UIC took a 2-0 lead at 55:10 off a corner kick opportunity.
- Doyle's header was saved at 56:11.
- The Titans played with an extra man advantage for the last 32 minutes as the UIC keeper received a red card for a handball outside the box.
- Manzo tallied her third save stopping a UIC player in the 62nd minute of action.
- DeLuca fired a shot that was saved in the 70th minute and after that, UIC got on the board again due to a penalty kick.
Game Notes
- The Titans lead the all-time series, 3-1.
- The Titans outshot their opponent for the fourth time this season.
- DeLuca's career high in shots was nine against Lawrence Tech earlier this season.
- Senior Paige Roberts made her third career start.
- Junior Sarah Hirschmann made her second career appearance in net and played the final 13:46 of the game.
