DETROIT (11/10/2017) -- University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer senior
Spiro Pliakos (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) has been voted 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team it was announced on Thursday afternoon.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District teams are voted on by Sports Information Directors from across the country. The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
Pliakos is a four-time All-Horizon League forward, who this season ranked second on the Titans with 15 points on seven goals and one assist in 13 games. The Rochester Hills, Mich. native was the 2014 Horizon League Freshman of the Year and holds a 3.87 GPA in Business Administration at the University. He is enrolled in a five-year MBA program with a concentration on accounting and finance.
He was voted Second Team All-Horizon League in 2017 to become the second player in school history to earn four All-Conference honors in his Titan career. The team co-captain was voted to the Horizon League Men's Soccer All-Academic Team and after the first weekend of the season, was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week as well as HL Offensive Player of the Week. He finished with three game-winning goals and 43 shots on the year.
Pliakos is among the candidates that will now be up for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, with those accolades being announced later in November. Pliakos was one of just two Horizon League men's soccer student-athletes to earn the accolade with the other being Milwaukee's Evan Conway.
Pliakos is the third Titan in the past four seasons to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District laurels after
Tommy Bowman (2016 season) and Matt Ybarra (2014 season).
