DETROIT (11/13/2017) -- Seven Titans scored in double figures and the red, white and blue shot over 50.0 percent from the field as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team cruised past Michigan-Dearborn, 105-82, on Monday night at historic Calihan Hall.
The game opened up the 65th season of Calihan Hall, the home of Titan men's and women's basketball.Â
Junior
Kameron Chatman led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds. Senior
Jaleel Hogan hit all six of his shots and finished with 14 points, while freshman
Jermaine Jackson Jr., tallied 13 points and five assists and senior
Roschon Prince netted 11 points and grabbed five boards.Â
Junior
Tariiq Jones posted 11 points, four rebounds and four assists and junior
Josh McFolley and sophomore
Corey Allen netted 10 points apiece.Â
The Titans – who never trailed - shot 53.3 percent (40-of-75) for the game with 12 triples and registered 21 assists.Â
Detroit Mercy will return to action this weekend at the 2K Sports Classic Benefitting The Wounded Warrior Project Belmont Subregional. The Titans will meet fellow Jesuit-rival Seattle on Saturday and either host Belmont or Houston Baptist on Sunday.Â
First Half:
- The Titans never trailed starting the game with a dunk from junior Gerald Blackshear Jr., followed by a three from Jones.
- The Titans led 12-7 when they scored five in a row for their first double-digit lead as Jackson Jr., connected on two free throws and then Chatman nailed another triple just five minutes into the contest.
- UM-Dearborn cut it to a one-point game, 21-20, at the 12:18 mark, but then Detroit Mercy went on an 11-2 run to push it back to double digits, ending with two free throws from Allen to make it a 32-22 game.
- The Titans had their largest lead of 13 points twice, once as McFolley banged in a three for a 45-32 lead at the 3:02 mark and then again when Jones hit two from the charity stripe for a 49-36 contest with under a minute to go.Â
- Detroit Mercy shot just under 50.0 percent hitting at 48.6 percent (18-of-27), including 7-of-17 (41.2%) from long range.Â
Second Half:
- The Titans led by nine, 57-48, when they blew the game open on a 15-4 run for a 72-52 advantage at the 14:04 mark.
- Jackson Jr., and Allen had 3-pointers in that span, while Jones and Hogan got inside for scores.
- A three-point play by Prince increased the lead to 22, 77-55, with 12:47 left and a minute later, senior DeShawndre Black connected on another trifecta for an 80-57 lead, the biggest on the night for the red, white and blue.Â
- The Titans also held a 23-point cushion at 88-65 and 92-69 before settling for the 105-82 finale.Â
- The Titans shot 57.9 percent in the second half (22-of-38).Â
Game Notes:
- The Titans now lead the all-time series with UM-Dearborn winning all three match-ups.
- Jermaine Jackson '99 served as head coach of the team tonight as Bacari Alexander '99 missed the contest due to personal matters. The athletic department will have no further comment and he will be back to coach this weekend.
- Detroit Mercy is now 75-11 in home openers dating back to the 1932-33 campaign, including 24-straight home-opening victories.
- The Titans have now won 31 in a row against non-DI schools.
- Detroit Mercy is now 85-22 in its last 107 home games against non-league schools.
- The last time the Titans had 20 or more assists was back on Nov. 23, 2015, when they recorded 22 in a 122-70 victory over UM-Dearborn.
- The last time the Titans shot at least 53.3 percent was last season when they connected on 59.2 percent (29-of-49) against Cleveland State.
- The last 100-point game for Detroit Mercy was in a 115-108 overtime setback at Green Bay in 2016.
- It was the 92nd time in program history that the Titans recorded at least 100 points.Â
