Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Titans Edged By Murray State

DETROIT (12/22/2017) -- Freshman Jermaine Jackson Jr. and redshirt junior Kameron Chatman led three Titans in double figures with 16 points apiece as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team peppered Murray State all game long, but the Racers were able to come away with an 81-72 win at Calihan Hall on Friday night.

The Titans had three players score in double figures and nine players score on the night. The game was the final non-conference affair for the Titans.

Chatman also added six rebounds and junior Josh McFolley tallied 13 points. Junior Tariiq Jones had seven points and three boards and graduate senior Roschon Prince added five points and a team and season-high seven rebounds.

The Titans (4-9) trailed by as many as 10 in the second half, but kept chipping away getting to within three once and four on a couple of occasions. McFolley would spearhead an 8-2 run for the Titans, scoring all eight points and cutting the deficit to only 4, 62-66, but the Titans were unable to capitalize on the run and erase the difference.

Murray State (8-3) was able to hold off the Titans from getting any closer, while going on a 10-5 run in the last 4:11 to come away with a victory.

Detroit Mercy will now get ready for the Horizon League campaign which opens next week with the Titans at Green Bay on Thursday, Dec. 28.

First Half:
  • Titans controlled the tip but were unable to convert on the first shot of the game
  • Chatman would then drill a 3-point shot from Cole Long on the following possession, giving the Titans a 3-2 lead
  • Long would then drill a 3 on a shot fake from the top of the arc, extending the Titans lead to 8-6
  • That Titan lead would quickly be erased by a 7-0 run from the Racers, which would see the Titans fall behind, 16-10
  • The Titans would then battle back, yet again, cutting the deficit to only five, when McFoley hit a three-point shot, making the score 29-34 with just over six minutes remaining in the half
  • That three-point shot would be followed by a thundering dunk from Prince, setup by Jackson Jr.
  • Both teams would battle hard for the remainder of the half, with the halftime score being 40-36, in favor of MSU
  • The Titans shot 44 percent (11-of-25) from the field in the first half, along with 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from three-point range and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line
  • Chatman had a team-high 10 points in the first half

Second Half:
  • The second half began with a rapid pace out of the gate, with both teams fighting hard for a victory
  • The Titans would eventually face a deficit of 10, 64-54, before McFolley took them on an 8-2 run from Titans, 62-66, scoring all 8
  • The red, white and blue remained within striking distance the entire game
  • The score was 67-71 with 4:11 left and the Racers stayed calm from the free throw line, shooting 73 percent (8-of-11) to seal the victory
  • Titans shot 42 percent (13-of-31) from the field, 31 percent (4-of-13) from three-point range and 75 percent (6-of-8) from the free throw line in the second half
