Jermaine Jackson Jr. tallied a season-high 25 points and redshirt junior
Kameron Chatman posted his fifth double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell at Green Bay, 95-83, in the Horizon League opener for both schools on Thursday night.
Jackson Jr. also had six rebounds and shared the team high with five assists, while going 8-of-14 overall and 7-of-11 from behind the arc. Chatman also had five assists and was 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
Junior
Tariiq Jones recorded a season-high 13 points and five rebounds. Graduate senior
Roschon Prince added nine points with three boards, an assist, block and steal and sophomore
Corey Allen ended with eight points and a career-best eight rebounds.
Detroit Mercy (4-10, 0-1 HL) and Green Bay (6-8, 1-0 HL) battled all game long in a contest that featured 13 ties and seven lead changes.
The Titans led by as many as four in the first half and the Phoenix had a lead as large as 10, but it was just a 48-41 game heading into the half.
Detroit Mercy went on a 12-5 run to start the second half to knot it all up at 53-53. The Titans could never get out in front, and the game was tied six more times, the latest at 73-73 with 7:02 left. That is when Green Bay went on an 18-3 run over the next five minutes to pull away.
Senior
Jaleel Hogan added four points and senior
Isaiah Jones tied his season high for the third-straight game blocking three shots.
The Titans shot 42.6 percent overall (26-of-61) with 11 triples and had 16 assists.
The red, white and blue will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 30, as they visit Milwaukee in a 7 p.m. (EST) tip.
First Half:
- Hogan started the game with a layup and a couple of minutes later, a three by Jackson Jr. had the Titans up 8-5.
- Chatman gave the Titans the lead at 10-8 with a jumper and later on hit a three for an 18-14 advantage with 13:17 left in the first.
- The Titans also led by four at 20-16 at the 12:15 mark off a layup by Jones.
- Green Bay went on a 15-2 spurt to go ahead by nine, 31-22, with 6:51 left.
- A basket by Prince and then a three from Jackson Jr. cut the deficit to four, 31-27, but the Phoenix was able to stop that run and take a 10-point advantage, 41-31, with 4:10 remaining.
- Jackson Jr. would hit another long-distance shot with 1:47 on the clock to make it a five-point game, 44-39, before Green Bay went into the half up 48-41.
- Chatman had 14 points at the break and Jackson Jr. registered nine points, five assists and four rebounds.
Second Half:
- Chatman got the offense going with a 3-pointer, but that was followed up by a three-point play by Green Bay.
- Jackson Jr. tallied another three-ball, and after a turnover, Prince got inside for a bucket.
- After the Titans stopped the Phoenix on defense, Allen was fouled and split a pair at the line to make it just a one-point game, 51-50.
- Detroit Mercy was down 53-50 when Jackson Jr. drilled another trifecta to tie it up, and he also did that at 56-56 as his triple tied the game with 14:14 remaining.
- Green Bay took a 65-60 advantage with 12:09 left, when Allen and Jackson Jr. had back-to-back layups to get the Titans back within one.
- An old-fashioned three-point play by Jones knotted the score at 67-67 midway through the period, and a layup from sophomore Cole Long also tied it at 69-69 with 9:03 on the clock.
- Jackson Jr. nailed his sixth trey of the game at the 7:02 mark to tie it at 73-73, but from there, Green Bay went on an 18-3 run to take control of the contest.
Game Notes:
- Detroit Mercy now trails the all-time series, 29-25 and is 8-18 all-time on the road at Green Bay
- The Titans are 15-23 all-time in Horizon League openers and 11-27 in Horizon League road openers
- It was the seventh game this season that the Titans have connected on double-digit 3-pointers
- It was the sixth 20-point game of the season for Chatman
- Jackson Jr. had recorded a high of 16 points in three games this season before tonight
- Allen's previous career high in rebounds was six against UM-Dearborn earlier this year
- Jones now has three blocks in four games this season
- Jackson Jr. tied Allen for the most 3-pointers in a game on the season as Allen hit seven against Houston Baptist
