DETROIT (12/7/2017) -- Senior Spiro Pliakos (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) became the first male student-athlete in school history to earn First Team Academic-All American honors on Thursday after he was voted to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Men's Soccer First Team.

Pliakos was the lone Horizon League men's soccer student-athlete chosen 2017 Academic All-America by CoSIDA, with the award being voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Thirty-four (34) men's soccer student-athletes from across the country were selected to the Academic All-America Teams. Pliakos was one of the 11 members voted to the First Team.

The Rochester Hills, Mich. native and 2014 Horizon League Freshman of the Year maintains a 3.87 GPA and is enrolled in a five-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) program with a concentration on Accounting and Finance. Pliakos is a three-time member of the Horizon League Men's Soccer All-Academic Team.

The senior forward and co-captain in 2017, who became the second player in school history to earn four All-Conference accolades in his career, totaled 18 goals and 17 assists in his Titan career for 53 points. In 2017, Pliakos had seven goals, one assist and 15 points, along with three game-winning goals in just 13 games to earn Second Team All-Horizon League laurels.

Pliakos is the third Titan men's soccer student-athlete to school history to be named Academic All-American after Ablaye Camara earned Third and Second Team honors in 2002 and 2004, respectively, and Matt Ybarra earned Second Team honors in 2014.

He is the first CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American since softball's Kaleigh Rafter earned those honors in 2007. He is the fourth all-time along with Rafter, women's soccer Hall of Famer Mary Parker earning the honor in 2006 and fencing's Nancy Horvat receiving the honor in 1984.
