Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Titans Downed By RV/No. 17 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (2/11/2017) -- Sophomore Matthew Vangalen tallied five points and was one of four Titans with multiple goals, but it was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team fell, 14-8, at RV/No. 17 Ohio State in its season opener on Saturday afternoon at the Woody Hayes Complex.

Vangalen posted two goals and three assists in the game. The five points by Vangalen are the most ever by a Titan in their debut and the most ever by a Titan in a season opener.

Senior Kyle Beauregard and juniors Sean Birney and Alec Gilhooly each fired in two goals, while senior goalie Jason Weber made 11 saves.

Senior Ben Gjokaj tied his career high with 15 faceoff wins and picked up a career-best 10 ground balls. The 10 GB's are tied for the second-most in school history and are the most since Jordan Houtby had 10 against Michigan in 2012.

After Ohio State (2-0) scored the first goal of the game, Beauregard tied it up at 1-1 just two minutes in as he beat the goalie with a shot. OSU would score the next four goals before the Titans got their offense going.

Vangalen netted a goal with 2:21 left in the first and just over a minute later, Beauregard had his second of the game to make it 5-3. The Buckeyes were able to get one back at the 37-second mark, but taking advantage of a penalty, Birney fired in a man-up goal to make it 6-4 after the first.

The Titans kept battling with the nationally ranked squad in the second knotting the game at 6-6 at one point.

Birney took a pass from Vangalen and found the back of the net early in the second and then Gilhooly tied it at 6-6 with six minutes left as Vangalen fed him for the marker.

OSU would recover to score three in a row to take a 9-6 lead at the break and then opened the game up with three-straight tallies in the third.

Vangalen picked up his second goal of the contest late in the third and capped off his five-point performance finding Gilhooly for a score late in the fourth.

The Titans were 15-of-16 on clears and 2-of-5 on the extra-man attack.
