PONTIAC, Mich. (2/15/2017) -- Nine different Titans found the back of the net and Detroit Mercy scored the last five goals, but it wasn't enough as the men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-10 decision to Michigan in front of 1,537 fans at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.
It was the fourth largest crowd in Titan history following the 1,909 and 1,800 against Michigan in 2014 and 2012, respectively, and the 1,565 fans when the Titans took on Bellarmine in 2010.
Sophomore
Matthew Vangalen led the offense for the second-straight week in scoring with four points on a team-high three assists and a goal. Junior
Sean Birney netted two goals and freshman
Seth Mendell handed out two assists.
It was back and forth early on as both teams traded goals in the first half for a 5-5 game at the break.
Detroit Mercy (0-2) started the game with a bang as Birney ripped one past the Michigan (3-0) keeper nearly a minute into the contest.
The Titans then tied the game at 2-2 as junior
Adam Susalla located junior
Alec Gilhooly on the extra-man attack and he was able to put one between the pipes with 10:56 left in the first. The Titans then led 3-2 after one as sophomore
Emmett Green tallied his first career goal off a great pass from Mendell late in the opening period.
Detroit Mercy saw Michigan tie it at 3-3, but senior
Kyle Beauregard put the red, white and blue ahead firing shot to the twine with 6:45 left in the second. The Titans then used another U-M penalty to get on the board as Vangalen fed sophomore
Patrick Walsh and he put it through the pipes for a 5-4 advantage late in the second.
The game then got away from the Titans as the Wolverines scored 11 straight before Vangalen was able to set up freshman
Donavon Dempsey for his first collegiate goal with 5:51 left in the contest, which started a 5-0 spurt by the home team.
Birney got his second a little over a minute later and then Mendell was able to set up Vangalen for his marker on the day at the 2:10 mark. Junior
Adam Findlay got his first Division I goal late in the contest and junior
Lucas Ducharme capped off the offense with a score in the closing seconds.
Senior
Jason Weber made 10 saves in net and tied his career high with seven ground balls. Weber also tied his career best with two caused turnovers.
Junior
Charlie Hayes and sophomore
Sam Horton each had two caused turnovers and Birney along with redshirt freshman
Lucas Leyba picked up three GB's.
Detroit Mercy will now get ready to battle the Mercer Bears on Saturday, Feb. 18, in a game that is set for 3:30 p.m., at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.
