DAYTON, Ohio (3/24/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team collected eight hits but could not overcome an early hole as the Titans dropped their Horizon League Opener at Wright State, 5-1, on Friday night in the Buckeye State.
The Titans out-hit the Raiders, 8-6, but went just 3-for-14 with runners on base and stranded five during the setback.
Seven different players recorded hits for Detroit Mercy, highlighted by junior
Savvy Ferstle's 2-for-3 performance at the dish. Sophomore
Courtney Gilbert picked up a hit in three at-bats and scored the Titans' lone run in the third inning with the RBI going to sophomore
Jordan Manno.
Freshman
Liz Murphy got the start in the circle and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and a pair of walks in six innings of work.
The Raiders took a lead in the bottom of the first and pushed it to 4-0 with three runs in the third. Detroit Mercy scored in the fourth to cut within three, but Wright State tacked one on in the fifth as the Titans went scoreless the rest of the way.
Detroit Mercy and Wright State are back at it for a doubleheader on Saturday. The first pitch of game one was moved up to 12 p.m., with game two set for approximately 2 p.m. Game two is slated to be streamed on ESPN3:
