MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (3/4/2017) -- The Titans and Robert Morris have played in several close games over the past few years and Saturday was no different, however, the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team was just edged on the road in a 9-7 defeat.
Sophomore midfielder
Kaitlyn Wandelt notched her second-straight hat trick with a team-best three goals for the Titans (1-3). Classmate
Morgan Girardi added two goals in the second half for the Titans, while sophomore
Lexie Kinmond and junior
Jessica Snyder each scored goals for Detroit Mercy.
The Titans took a 2-1 lead midway through the first half after Wandelt found the back of the net after a great clear by junior
Lauren Webley. Minutes later, Snyder found the back of the net off a feed from junior
Brianna Plester at the 14:46 mark. Robert Morris scored the next two goals to take a 3-2 halftime advantage.
RMU scored the first goal of the second half, but Wandelt capitalized off a free-position opportunity to cut the deficit to one, 4-3, with 25:56 left. The Colonials scored the next goal, but Detroit Mercy tied the game, scoring two consecutive markers. Kinmond scored her eighth goal of the season and it was followed just 26 seconds later by Wandelt, who again scored off the free-position to knot the game, 5-5, with 19:50 remaining.
The game would be tied for more than the next nine minutes before Robert Morris found the back of the net with 10:33 left. RMU added another at the 7:55 mark to take a 7-5 lead. Girardi cut the deficit to one, 7-6, after a goal with 7:02 remaining.
RMU scored the next two before Girardi again found the back of the net to make the score 9-7 with just 1:05 remaining. Girardi would win the ensuing draw control, but the Titans turned the ball over. The Titans had one final look on net, but Girardi's shot was saved.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Allison McDonough had another strong game in net, turning away 11 shots for her third 10-plus save game of the season. She entered the contest No. 2 in the country with 12.6 saves per game. Junior
Emma Mucci controlled five of Detroit Mercy's 11 draw controls, while Girardi nabbed three draw controls. Wandelt and McDonough were each credited with two caused turnovers.

Lauren Webley and
Taylor Spray each added three ground balls. Wandelt was 2-of-4 on free-position opportunities.
The game was even on the stat sheet with Robert Morris holding a 32-29 shot advantage. Both teams had nearly the same amount of turnovers with Detroit Mercy forcing RMU into 23 turnovers. The Titans were 14-of-18 on clear attempts, including 5-for-6 in the second half.
Detroit Mercy had the edge in draw controls, 11-6, while also controlling more ground balls with a 24-23 advantage. The Titans took eight free-position shots in the contest.
