SAN DIEGO, Calif. (3/8/17) – The Titans could not overcome an early hole as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its finale from California against San Diego, 3-1.
The Torreros scored twice in the second inning after taking advantage of a pair of errors. The Titans reeled off four straight hits in the top of the third to cut the deficit to one at 2-1, but Detroit Mercy stranded three runners on base on a lineout to end the inning.
San Diego added a run in the fourth and the Titan bats went cold as the hosts held on for the 3-1 win.
Five Titans picked up hits in the defeat:
Jordan Manno,
Sydney Pollock,
Courtney Gilbert,
Savvy Ferstle and
Cheyenne Willeford. Gilbert recorded a RBI and Willeford scored a run to lead Detroit Mercy.
Freshman
Liz Murphy got the start in the circle and took the loss after allowing two runs (unearned) on four hits in two innings of work. Sophomore
Ashley Mauser came on in relief and pitched effectively, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three over four innings.
The Titans return to the Motor City and will regroup before a four-game stay at the Miami Ohio Invitational. Detroit Mercy will face Dayton, Miami (OH) and Fort Wayne on Mar. 18-19 in Oxford, Ohio.
