GREEN BAY, Wis. (4/14/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team scored a season-high 14 runs as the Titans took game one of a three-game set over Green Bay, 14-3, on Friday afternoon from Phoenix Field.
Seven Titans picked up hits on the day as the offense exploded for 12 hits and 14 runs. Sophomore
Courtney Gilbert and senior
Alyssa James led the way with three hits apiece. Gilbert went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and five RBI and James went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI.
Sophomore
Jordan Manno went 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks, two runs scored and three RBI and freshman
Ellie Boteler went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Senior
Laura Villagrana was a terror from the leadoff position, reaching base four times after going 1-for-1 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Villagrana scored three runs and added two RBI atop the Titan lineup.
Rookie
Liz Murphy earned the win after allowing three runs (two earned) across five innings of work. The win is her eighth of the season.
The Titans wasted little time getting the bats going as Villagrana walked to open the game and Manno followed with a two-run blast to give Detroit Mercy the early 2-0 lead.
The Phoenix added two runs in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 2-2, but the Titan bats picked up where they left off and plated six runs in the second. James capped the inning with a bases-clearing double to give the Titans a six run lead.
Detroit Mercy added three more in the third to push the lead to nine and after Green Bay manufactured a run in the bottom of the third, the Titans tacked on three more in the fifth to take a 14-3 lead.
The Titans finished the game with a 12-6 advantage in hits and tallied six extra base hits on the day with five doubles and a long ball. Detroit Mercy was all over the base paths as the squad recorded six walks on the day.
With the win, the Titans improve to 6-4 in Horizon League play. Detroit Mercy is one win away from matching its league win total of seven from last year. The seven Horizon League wins in 2016 were the highest for the program since the 2006 squad posted 13 conference victories.
Junior
Savvy Ferstle saw her 11-game hitting streak come to an end after going 0-for-2 with a walk. Ferstle lined out to right and flew out to left in her two official at bats.
The Titans will look to continue swinging the hot bat as the series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m. EST, with game two following at approximately 3 p.m.
