DETROIT (4/2/2017) -- Sophomore attack
Lexie Kinmond surpassed 100 career points and senior
Kelsi Pritchard established a new career-best for goals in a season, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team suffered a 12-6 setback to visiting ASUN foe Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
Pritchard keyed an early, second half rally for the Titans, tallying a hat trick in less than three minutes to open the second half. The senior midfielder scored her first of the game just 39 seconds into the second and tied the game up, 3-3, just 41 seconds later off a feed from Kinmond. Pritchard then fired home another at the 27:06 mark off an assist from
Jordyn Beam to put the Titans on top, 4-3.
The Detroit Mercy defense was strong all day, allowing a season-low three first-half goals and five total in the opening 38 minutes of the contest. After the Chanticleers re-gained the lead, junior
Brianna Plester tied the contest back up, hesitating on a free-position chance, before whipping one past the Coastal Carolina goalkeeper to knot the score 5-5 with 21:10 remaining.
Detroit Mercy had some opportunities on net later in the second half, but were turned away several times by CCU goalkeeper Harley Barrett with the visitors from South Carolina pulling away in the later stages of the second frame. Junior goalkeeper
Allison McDonough was just as strong in net for Detroit Mercy, making nine saves, forcing two turnovers and totaling four ground balls for the Titans.
Kinmond totaled three points or better for the ninth time in 11 games in 2017, finishing with two goals and one assist. Kinmond needed one point to reach 100 in her career entering the game and scored the first Titan goal of the game at the 12:23 mark of the first to become the eighth player in school history with 100 career points. She leads the squad with 38 points (20 goals, 18 assists) after 11 games.
Pritchard tallied her fifth hat trick of 2017 and third in conference play to reach 23 goals on the season, a new single-season high surpassing the 22 she had as a sophomore in 2015. She also tied a career-high for points (27) during the game. The senior co-captain tallied a team-best three caused turnovers and three ground balls during the game and now just sits five points shy of 100 in her career.
Junior
Emma Mucci corralled four of Detroit Mercy's seven draw controls on the afternoon, while Plester added two DC. Mucci, Plester and junior defenders
Taylor Spray and
Lauren Webley all had two ground balls, while junior defender
Emma DeYoung tallied two caused turnovers.
Detroit Mercy was efficient with its shot-on-goal percentage, firing 20 of 23 shots on cage for a season-high 87.0 percentage. The Titans had more shots on goal (15-14) in the second half than Coastal Carolina. The Titans were also strong on clears, going 17-of-22, while forcing 14 Coastal Carolina turnovers.
The Titans finished with a season-low 13 turnovers and converted on 3-of-6 free-position chances.
It was just the second career meeting between the two schools and first as conference opponents. Detroit Mercy fell by one goal to Coastal Carolina in 2013.
