CHICAGO (5/10/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team suffered an extra innings defeat to Wright State, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the Horizon League Tournament from UIC's Flames Field.
The fifth-seeded Titans took a 1-0 lead over No. 4 Wright State into the fifth, but the Raiders would rally to tie it at 1-1 as Honnah Susor tripled in a run to right center in the bottom of the fifth.
After a pair of scoreless frames, the game would go to extras as the pitcher's duel continued. With rain beginning to fall in the bottom of the eighth, Wright State broke through as Susor tripled over the first base bag and scored on an errant throw to the cutoff to stun the Titans, 2-1.
Detroit Mercy stranded the bases loaded in the top of the fifth and two more runners in the sixth.
Freshman
Liz Murphy was strong in the circle for Detroit Mercy. The rookie gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits in a complete game effort. Murphy allowed just six base runners and struck out three while pitching into the eighth.
Sophomore
Kara Vitale went 1-for-3 with the Titans' lone RBI, while classmate
Jordan Manno reached twice on a hit and a walk in three at bats.
With her single to left in the top of the third, Manno extended her hitting streak to 15 and her reached-base streak to 27.
Senior
Cheyenne Willeford went 1-for-3, while
Courtney Gilbert and
Savvy Ferstle added the final two Titan hits in four at-bats apiece.
Detroit Mercy will face No. 6 Oakland in an elimination game Thursday at 1 p.m. ET.
