CHICAGO (5/11/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team picked up its second elimination game win with a 6-2 triumph over Wright State on Thursday night in the Horizon League Softball Tournament from UIC.

The fifth-seeded Titans jumped on No. 4 Wright State early and pulled away to avenge a 2-1 loss to the Raiders in the tournament opener on Wednesday. Wright State becomes the second team the Titans knocked out of the tournament after Detroit Mercy sent Oakland home with a win earlier in the day.

Sophomore Ashley Mauser was in total control from the circle, navigating through the lineup and limiting the Raiders to two runs on four hits in seven innings of work. Mauser earned the win in front of a stellar defensive effort that twisted a pair of double plays, including a game-ending turn in the seventh.

Seven Titans picked up hits as the team tallied 10 in the game. Junior Savvy Ferstle led the way with two hits, two runs and two RBI, while senior Laura Villagrana went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Sophomore Jordan Manno went 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot, pushing her reached-base streak to 29 straight games.

Senior Alyssa James and freshman Ellie Boteler each went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI to cap the top offensive performers for the Titans.

James smacked a two-run double in the first to give the Titans the early lead and after Wright State scored in the second, Detroit Mercy answered with three runs in the third to push the lead to 5-1.

The Titans went up 6-1 on a Ferstle double in the fifth and the Raiders got one back with a solo homer in the sixth, but Mauser and the defense slammed the door to pick up the victory.

The win gives Detroit Mercy its second of the tournament for the first time since 2005. The Titans will look for win number three as the squad advances to take on No. 3 Valparaiso in another elimination game at 1 p.m. ET on Friday.

The game will be streamed live on ESPN3 at the link atop this page.
