Women’s Soccer Upended At Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (9/10/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team went on the road to in-state rival Central Michigan, but the Chippewas were able to tally a late first-period goal en route to a 2-0 decision on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Marina Manzo posted eight saves as CMU (4-2-1) outshot the Titans, 18-11.

Detroit Mercy (2-5-1) had a couple of good looks in the first half and two corner kick opportunities in the second period, but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Titans will now begin conference play on the road on Friday as the red, white and blue travel to defending Horizon League champion Milwaukee before wrapping up non-conference play at home against Eastern Michigan on Sunday.

First Half
  • Detroit Mercy had an early offensive look as junior Carly Fiorido fed a long ball outside the box that was controlled by senior Phylisha Drayton and she found freshman Kelli Doyle, but her shot was saved just five minutes in.
  • Almost five minutes later, Drayton attempted a shot that was high.
  • Manzo then came up with a pair of saves in the 12th and 13th minute
  • Senior Rachel DeLuca had a shot that was saved at 15:41.
  • The Chippewas then attacked the net with a pair of shots on goal in the 19th minute, but Manzo made two saves in a 35-second span.
  • The Titans had a big opportunity to score in the 28th minute as Drayton's shot was saved and off the rebound, sophomore Casey Couturier missed high.
  • CMU later took a 1-0 lead at 37:16 off a shot to the far post.

Second Half
  • The Chippewas had a corner kick just two minutes into the half, but Manzo was able to deny the ensuing shot.
  • Detroit Mercy had two corners in the 56th and 57th minute, but did not get a shot off.
  • Drayton then had a shot that was saved at the 58:51 mark.
  • CMU added its second goal with just under 20 minutes remaining.
  • Drayton had her fourth shot of the game saved late in the contest.

Key Notes
  • The Titans are 38-35-10 all-time against MAC schools.
  • Manzo had her fifth game this season with six or more saves, and was one off her season high of nine that she posted at Pittsburgh and at Northern Arizona.
