Titans Host Oakland In #MetroSeries Battle On Red Out Saturday

DETROIT (1/18/2018) -- The atmosphere will be electric inside historic Calihan Hall as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team hosts in-state rival Oakland in a #MetroSeries showdown on Saturday.

Game time is set for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and WADL-38 with Dan Leach and Earl Cureton on the call as well as over the airwaves with Cliff Russell providing the action on 910 AM Superstation.

It will be bleeding red inside the building as the game will feature a "Red Out". Red rally towels will be given out and all fans are encouraged to wear red. It is also the second game of a doubleheader as the women will host Milwaukee at 1 p.m.

Detroit Mercy and Oakland branded the annual rivalry called the Metro Series in 2013, with the Metro Rivalry Cup awarded to the school with the most head-to-head victories over the course of the academic year. Separated by just 26 miles, Detroit Mercy and Oakland are the only Division I schools located in the Metro Detroit area and compete in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, men's and women's track and field.

  • Detroit Mercy leads the overall series, 13-7, as the Titans split the series with Oakland last year, winning on the road, 93-88.
  • The Titans are also 12-3 all-time against Oakland in Calihan Hall, but have dropped two of the last three.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

CALIHAN HALL TURNS 65
  • The 2017-18 season marks the 65th anniversary of historic Calihan Hall.
  • The dedication of the University's Memorial Building, as it was known back then, took place May 25, 1952. The first basketball game was played Dec. 2 of that year when the U-D men beat Kalamazoo, 75-61.
  • In 1977, the name was changed to Calihan Hall in honor of the Titans' first basketball All-American, the late Bob Calihan.
  • On Dec. 5, 2011, the floor of Calihan Hall was dedicated to former coach Dick Vitale.

112 YEARS OF TITAN BASKETBALL
  • This season is the 112th year of collegiate basketball at the University of Detroit Mercy - the oldest Division I program in the state - as the Tigers – yes, Tigers as they were called back then - beat Collegiate, 18-7, in the first official Detroit basketball game in 1905.
  • Until 1919, the U-D teams were known as the Tigers. In the fall of 1919, Detroit Free Press' sportswriter Stan Brink, who was covering football for the paper, thought that a good nickname for the team would be the Titans.
  • In Greek mythology, the Titans were a class of oversized people who happened to have almost perfect physiques.
  • In its 112 years (two years records are missing in 1907-08 and 1908-09) Detroit Mercy is 1,401-1190 (.543) with two regular-season HL Championships (1998, 1999) and three tournament titles (1994, 1999, 2012).
  • Detroit Mercy has also made six NCAA tournaments (1962, 1977, 1979, 1998, 1999, 2012) and seven NIT appearances (1960, 1961, 1965, 1978, 2001, 2002, 2013).

TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SLATE
  • The 13 opponents on the Titan non-conference schedule combined to go 257-205 (55.6%) last season, and the 11 DI foes are 128-73 (63.6%) already on the year.
  • That number has the Titan non-conference schedule ranked 45th overall in the nation.

ALLEN HEATING UP
  • Sophomore Corey Allen has been in double figures in 15 of his 19 games with five 20+ contests and three 30+ games.
  • Last week in two Titan wins over Cleveland State and Youngstown State, he averaged 29.5 points on 56.7 percent shooting, including 60.0 percent from three and 80.0 percent at the line.
  • He poured in a game-high 25 points going 9-of-14 from the field with eight rebounds and had the game-winning layup as time expired over Cleveland State. He followed that up with a game-high 34 points on 8-of-16 shooting with five 3-pointers and a career-best 13-of-16 at the line against Youngstown State.

PAIR OF 30'S
  • Maybe a Titan first in the long and storied history of the program as two players went for 30 points in the win over Youngstown State.
  • Sophomore Corey Allen led the way with 34 points, while freshman Jermaine Jackson Jr. tallied 32.
  • Research is still being conducted to see if this has ever happened in Titan history.

OUR ROYAL PRINCE
  • Graduate senior Roschon Prince is starting to find his rhythm at Detroit Mercy as he has been in double figures in scoring four times in the last six games.
  • He had 10 points and nine rebounds against Youngstown State and that was after a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds versus Cleveland State.
  • He ended with 10 points - hitting all five of his shots - against Wright State and almost recorded a double-double with nine points and 10 boards versus NKU.
  • He posted his first Titan double-double - and the seventh of his career - with 11 points and 10 rebounds at Milwaukee.
  • After averaging 5.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in his first 12 games, Prince is tallying 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds, while shooting 62.0 percent from the field in conference play.

  • The Titans have used 11 different starting line-ups so far on the season.
  • Only Jermaine Jackson Jr. has started all 20 games this year for the red, white and blue.

HIGH POWERED OFFENSE
  • The Titans currently rank first in the Horizon League and 39th in the nation in scoring offense at 81.5 points per game.
  • Detroit Mercy has scored at least 71 points in 16 games, including three 100+point efforts.

EXPLOSIVE
  • The Titans shot over 50.0 percent for the third time this season in the win over Cleveland State, but the story was the 70.4 percent (19-of-27) they shot in the second half, scoring 53 points in the process.
  • In the win against Youngstown State, the Titans shot 47.0 percent overall, but 58.6 percent (17-of-29) in the second half where they were also 8-of-11 from behind the arc and scored 59 points.
  • Detroit Mercy ranks second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (35.5%) and fourth in field goal shooting (44.3%).

CLEAN THE GLASS
  • The Titans have won the battle of the boards four times in the last seven games, losing just once and tying in the other two contests.
  • The Titans pulled down a season-best 21 offensive rebounds against Youngstown State, the most since they had 22 against Green Bay in 2016.
  • Detroit Mercy outrebounded NKU by a 48-47 margin, the second most rebounds on the season behind only the 49 versus HBU.
  • The red, white and blue currently rank third in the Horizon League in rebounding at 37.1 per game.

TAKING ADVANTAGE
  • Detroit Mercy has done a great job at the free throw line connecting on 74.3 percent, third in the HL and 68th in the country.
  • Detroit Mercy has hit 80.0 percent or more at the line in seven games, including some great performances in 18-of-22 at Virginia Tech, 20-of-23 versus Seattle, 13-of-15 in the road win at Saint Louis, 12-of-14 versus Toledo and 17-of-20 against Western Michigan.
  • Some of the top free throw shooters include Jermaine Jackson Jr. (88.0%, 44-of-50), Kameron Chatman (87.1%, 54-of-62), Corey Allen (80.3%, 61-of-76) and Josh McFolley (80.3%, 49-of-61).

JJJ FILLING UP THE STAT SHEET
  • Rookie Jermaine Jackson Jr. posted stats all around as a true freshman on the road in his collegiate debut at Virginia Tech tallying 16 points with seven rebounds and three assists.
  • The seven rebounds tied for the team lead, while his six defensive caroms led the team.
  • Jackson Jr. is coming off his second-straight 20-point game - and third of the season - with a game-high 22 points at IUPUI.
  • He had a monster game scoring a season-best 32 points against Youngstown State - one shy of a Titan freshman record - on 12-of-17 shooting with six 3-pointers.

  • * 2nd in the HL in rebounding at 8.8 rpg.
  • * 1st in the HL in 3-point shooting at 44.7%

  • At Saint Louis on Nov. 22, he posted 18 points and nine rebounds, but his biggest play was the game-winning shot with one second left.
