ROCHESTER, Mich. (1/27/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball had a season-best 12 blocks, the most for a Titan squad in two seasons, but the Titans dropped an 83-50 contest at Oakland on Saturday afternoon.
The Titans swatted away four balls in the opening 10 minutes, seven in the first half and 12 total, recording the most blocks in a single game since head coach
Bernard Scott's first season in 2015-16.
Sophomore
Ashley Miller had a career-best five blocks, ironically the most for a Titan since the last time Oakland and Detroit Mercy met in Rochester, when Kelsey Mitchell had five rejections in last year's victory at O'rena.
Senior
Brianne Cohen led the Titans in scoring on the day with 15 points, moving into ninth place on the career scoring list with 1,335 points. Cohen surpassed Shareta Brown (10th) and Molly Peterman (9th) in career scoring during the contest.
Sophomore
Anja Marinkovic and junior
Brittney Jackson were also in double figures with 11 points each. Cohen and sophomore
Zoey Oatis (six points) each added two blocks with a total of six players notching rejections on the afternoon.
Cohen scored the first four points of the game, but Oakland took an early lead on the Titans following a 12-2 run. Oatis scored the next four points to pull the Titans to within four, 14-10, late in the first quarter. Cohen added a lay-up off a feed from Oatis late in the stanza, but the Titans trailed after one, 18-12.
Jackson scored off a jumper early in the second but Oakland followed with back-to-back 3-pointers. Miller grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the putback and it was followed by a high-arching jumper from Oatis, who swished the long shot to pull the Titans to six, 24-18, at the 7:38 mark of the second.
Marinkovic then connected on a pair of 3-pointers to force Oakland into a timeout with Detroit Mercy down just three, 28-25, with 5:58 left in the second. Cohen would add a lay-up with four minutes left in the second, but the Golden Grizzlies would use a run to go up 39-27 at the halftime break.
Jackson and Marinkovic each scored in the first minute of the third quarter, but Oakland continued to make its shots, going up 17 points, 54-37, with 3:27 left in the third frame. After three quarters, the Titans trailed 61-42.
Marinkovic and Jackson each knocked down triples in the fourth as the Titans made five treys on the afternoon. Detroit Mercy had 15 assists in the game, but also had 22 turnovers. Oakland out-rebounded the Titans, 55-36.
For the game, Detroit Mercy shot 33 percent (19-of-57) from the floor and 50 percent from the free throw line (7-of-14). Miller and Jackson each led the team with six boards, while Marinkovic tied a career-best with four assists.
Leah Somerfield scored 10 points in the opening quarter and led Oakland with 27 points and 18 rebounds. Four players were in double figures for the Golden Grizzlies.
