Titans Open Second Half of League Slate Thursday

DETROIT (1/31/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team opens the second half of the Horizon League schedule Thursday evening, hosting Cleveland State for a 7 p.m. game from Calihan Hall. The game may be seen via ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN Applications.

The Titans are 40-17 all-time against Cleveland State, dropping the earlier matchup this season at Cleveland State, 75-50, on Dec. 30. The Titans are 23-4 in home games against the Vikings. Head coach Bernard Scott is 4-2 in his career against CSU, a team where he was an assistant prior to coming to the Titans.

Seniors Brianne Cohen moved into the top-10 in career scoring at Oakland, scoring 15 points to surpass two players (Shareta Brown, Molly Peterman) in moving into ninth place all-time in career points (1,335). Cohen is 27 points shy of eighth place -- Patrice Martin (1,362 career points).

Urbanick is nearing the all-time 3-point mark and with 221 career treys, she's 10 shy of the career record, set by former Titan standout Senee Shearer of 231. Urbanick has sank 15 triples in her past eight games. She has sank multiple 3-pointers in eight of her past 12 contests.

Detroit Mercy tallied its most blocks in a single game since 2015, swatting away 12 balls at Oakland. It tied for the most blocks in a game in Scott's three-year tenure. Seven Titans had blocks in the contest, led by Ashley Miller's career-high five blocks.

Last Time Out
The Titans had a season-best 12 blocks, the most for a Titan squad in two seasons, but the Titans dropped an 83-50 contest at Oakland on Jan. 27.

The Titans swatted away four balls in the opening 10 minutes, seven in the first half and 12 total, recording the most blocks in a single game since head coach Bernard Scott's first season in 2015-16.

Sophomore Ashley Miller had a career-best five blocks, ironically the most for a Titan since the last time Oakland and Detroit Mercy met in Rochester, when Kelsey Mitchell had five blocks.

Senior Brianne Cohen led the Titans in scoring on the day with 15 points, moving into ninth place on the career scoring list with 1,335 points. Cohen surpassed Shareta Brown (10th) and Molly Peterman (9th) in career scoring during the contest.

Sophomore Anja Marinkovic and junior Brittney Jackson were also in double figures with 11 points each. Cohen and sophomore Zoey Oatis (six points) each added two blocks with a total of seven players notching rejections on the afternoon.

Scouting Cleveland State
The Vikings have won three of their past four games, including winning two-straight at home against Wright State and Northern Kentucky. Cleveland State earned a 72-49 win on Saturday over NKU after topping the Raiders in overtime, 71-70. The Vikings is 5-4 in games played away from Cleveland.

Cleveland State is in fifth place in the Horizon League standings with a 6-4 league mark.

The Vikings have two of the top four scorers in the league and three of the top 15 with Ashanti Abshaw and Khayla Livingston at second and fourth, respectively, at 19.5 points and 15.5 points per game. Senior Olivia Voskuhl ranks 15th in the conference with a 12.4 points per game average.

Voskuhl leads the team in rebounding and ranks seventh in the HL at 7.4 rebounds per game, while Livingston is fourth in the league at 4.3 assists per game. Abshaw leads the conference in steals with 53. Livingston (56, 1st) and Abshaw (41, 2nd) are also the leaders in 3-pointers made in the conference.

All-Time Series
Detroit Mercy is 40-19 all-time against Cleveland State and the Titans are 4-2 against the Vikings under head coach Bernard Scott. The Titans hold a 23-5 mark at home against CSU in the all-time series. Cleveland State picked up a victory earlier this season in Cleveland, 75-50.

Block Party
Detroit Mercy has 100 or more blocks in each of the past two seasons under head coach Bernard Scott. Detroit Mercy totaled 130 blocks in 2016-17, which was the sixth-best mark in program history and the most blocks in a season since the 1996-97 campaign.

The Titans have 77 blocks on the year, averaging 3.9 rejections per game, second in the Horizon League. Detroit Mercy blocked eight shots vs. Michigan State and then tallied its most blocks since 2015 vs. Fort Wayne with 12 swats at Oakland on Jan. 27.

Ashley Miller posted five blocks at Oakland and leads the team with 15 blocks. Brianne Cohen (12), Nicole Urbanick (career-high 11) and Lexey Tobel (10) all have double-digit blocks in 2017-18.
