Getting To Know Jacob Holland

The Titans will welcome a brand new coaching staff as well as 13 new players in 2018-19. The fifth of the series "Getting To Know" features graduate student Jacob Holland, who was born in Los Lunas, New Mexico, and most recently attended New Mexico Highlands University, the alma mater of his dad, a member of the school's Hall of Fame for football.

How Did You Find Your Way To Detroit Mercy?
"It really found me. When I found out coach Davis got the job, we just have mutual associates and he just called me and asked if I wanted to come along with the journey, and I said yeah."

Was It Tough To Leave New Mexico Highlands University?
"I graduated, so that was my plan — to graduate and move on to another institution for my fifth year. That was my plan the whole time."

What Do You Know About Coach Davis?
"He gets the best out of his players every year. All of his teams go to the tournament, underdogs every time. He is just old-school, old-fashioned. You just work and good things will happen."

What Are Some Things That You've Been Learning From The Coaching Staff So Far?
"How to play at a high level at a high rate of speed. Really playing with a lot of speed, having to be ready at all times. Everybody has to be ready, we're going to need everybody for the journey. It's just next man up; whenever someone can't go, next man up."

Did You Know Anything About Detroit Mercy Before Coming Out Here?
"I've seen the Titans play on TV a couple years ago, but I didn't really know a lot about them."

What's The Transition Been Like And What Are You Guys Looking Forward To This Year?
"We're looking forward to making a run at the conference championship, really. We're all here for the same reason. Everyone's new. We've all got one goal in mind and that's it. It's going to be a fun transition, I feel like, for most of us."

What Is Your Biggest Strength And Your Biggest Weakness?
"My biggest strength I would say is my versatility. I can score, I can pass, I can rebound. I can score at all levels and I can defend. My maturity, with the young group that we have, I think I can be a leader and that's what coach is looking for me to do. My biggest weakness that I'd like to improve on would be my leadership vocally. I'm a very quiet person. I need to learn how to be more vocal with my teammates and my coaches and so we can stay on the same page easier."

What Stands Out To You About The Area And What Do You Like About Detroit?
" I love Detroit. It's big, it's really spread out and it's very historic. I like downtown, we (my fiancé and I) live downtown and all the buildings are historic."

You Come From An Athletic Family, Your Dad Played at New Mexico Highlands University And Is In Their Hall Of Fame. Does Coming From That Background And Pedigree, Does That Help You In The Transition To Playing Division I Basketball?
"Absolutely. When athletics is just a part of your family, that's what you're expected to do. It's just life at that point. Everyone else does it; you've got to do it too."

What Is Your Major And What Are You Hoping To Do With It?
"I'm in the Health Services Administration Master's program. With that, I can look forward to being an administrator for a hospital or for the NCAA with sports or basketball at an institution."
