Getting To Know Willy Isiani

The Titans will welcome a brand new coaching staff as well as 13 new players in 2018-19. The seventh of the series "Getting To Know" features freshman Willy Isiani, who hails from Tbilisi, Georgia, and most recently played at ASI Prep Academy in California.

How Did You Find Your Way To Detroit Mercy?
"I was playing at ASI Prep School and then when I finished playing in May, I went back to Georgia. I think from that in some tournaments that coaches saw me and like in the middle of August, coach Dildy called me up and he offered me a scholarship here."

What's It Been Like Getting To Know The City Of Detroit?
"I haven't been out very much because I've been busy studying. You need a car to get around here. I'm international, so I don't have a way to transport. I have been to grocery stores and stuff like that with my friends. It feels nice, the city is good to explore. For now, nothing much, because I haven't seen a lot of it."

What's The Transition Been Like For You, Coming From Georgia To The United States?
"Transition, but I'm pretty used to it because when I was 16 years old, I went to Spain and I was living there for three years playing basketball and studying. I then went to Los Angeles for six months and came here. I'm pretty used to the new culture."

What Stands Out To You About Detroit Mercy's Campus?
"For me, the best one is Calihan Hall. It's the first time that I can go and work out as much as I want and get shots up. I have a freedom of coming here, working out and going back or strength coach Nick Wilson is always there. It's very helpful."

What's It Like Learning Under Coach Davis?
"He's a pretty experienced coach as we know. He has a big history. Before I came here, I looked him up and was pretty impressed by his achievements. When I was coming here, I already knew that I was coming with an experienced coach that I could entrust myself with to develop further. What I was imagining, it is happening here right now, because I have learned a lot of things from him and the coaching staff."

What's Your Biggest Strength And Weakness?
"I think my biggest strength is my shooting ability because I can open up the zone and grab a defender out from the paint. It's easier for guards to attack, drive and kick out. If who's guarding me is bigger than me and heavier than me, I can use my speed to get around him. I think my shooting opens up many advantages for our team. My biggest weakness would be athleticism because I can't jump as high as these guys can so I have to use my intelligence to cover it up."

Who Do You Look Up To In Basketball?
"There's a couple that I took moves from, like Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Jordan. They played very easy basketball. When you're watching them, you see a style of basketball that's pretty easy, but when you try to work on their moves, you understand that it's very difficult."

What's Your Major And What Do You Hope To Do With It?
"My major is Business Administration and Management. For me, if I'm not in the NBA, then I can go to Europe. To know how to manage my money, to know how to spend it or get more, where to invest and how not lose money. Many athletes make mistakes with their investments and lose their money when they finish their basketball career. I want to have a secondary job with basketball and have a safe life after I finish my career."

What Do You Really Like About Basketball?
"For me, it's the number one sport. In a couple of seconds, you decide everything. You have to be a very fast thinker and you can improvise during the games. One second can change the game. For me, that's very exciting. Even if you're an underdog, you can beat a stronger team. It's a very unpredictable game and that's what I like about it. You can change the outcome until the clock is finished."

You Were Also Into Swimming …
"I was in swimming, soccer and martial arts. I was in a lot of stuff because my family, we have three brothers, and all of us went through the same things. My father, my mother and my grandmother were all athletes and they wanted to bring us up as athletes, because in Georgia, you have to know how to defend yourself first and you have to be strong. In my time, now it's changed a little bit, there was a lot of bullying in school. My father wanted to feel safe with us going to school."

You Know Luka Doncic; Where Did You Guys Face Each Other?
"In Spain, it was in the Under 18 Championships. They had the best team and they beat us. They won a championship that year against Barcelona. I don't remember how much they beat us, but they beat us pretty good. The thing was, for me, I was injured for four months before we played and it was like my rehabilitation time so I couldn't get all of the experience I wanted."
