ALL-TIME SERIES
- These two campuses are separated by just 200 miles and are three hours apart, but this will be just the fifth career meeting between the two squads.
- The teams have split the four previous games, three of which have taken place in the Motor City, where the Titans are 2-1.
- The last time these two teams met, it came down to the wire as Detroit Mercy held the lead the entire second half when Kent State's Haminn Quaintance grabbed an offensive rebound and tipped it in, drawing a foul. His free throw gave the Golden Flashes a 60-58 advantage with 29 seconds left, but after a timeout, the Titans set up the game-winning play and that came from a long three from Jon Goode as the buzzer sounded for a 61-60 victory at Calihan Hall.Â
THE OHIO TITANS
- Detroit Mercy will see a lot of Ohio in the next six weeks as the game against Kent State starts a nine-game swing against teams from the Buckeye State.
- Six of those contests will be on the road, including games against former conference rivals Dayton and Xavier.Â
- The Titans are 280-219 (.561) all-time against programs that reside in the state of Ohio.
COACH HAS SEEN KENT STATE BEFORE
- Head coach Mike Davis is 2-3 all-time against Kent State, with a couple of those meetings coming in the NCAA Tournament.
- While at Indiana, he lost in the first round to the Golden Flashes in 2001, 77-73, and in the following season, the Hoosiers got some revenge beating Kent State, 81-69, in the Elite 8.Â
- He also faced them three times with UAB dropping two of those games on the road (2009, 2011) and the lone win at home in 2010.
FAMILY FUN
- Nothing new for the Titans to have a family connection in the program and this season, Detroit Mercy will feature three Davis' in head coach Mike Davis, assistant coach Mike Davis Jr. and freshman guard Antoine Davis.
- From 2010-13, the Titans had head coach Ray McCallum and star guard Ray McCallum winning the Horizon League Championship in 2012 and earning a trip to the NIT in 2013.
DAVIS EARNS HL AWARD
- Antoine Davis was named both the Horizon League Freshman and Player of the Week on Monday.
- It is the second time this season he has garnered a conference award as he was selected the Freshman of the Week on Nov. 12. He is also the second player (Oakland's Isaiah Brock on Feb. 6, 2017) to be named both player and freshman of the week since the Horizon League began naming a weekly newcomer in the 2012-13 season.
- Davis helped Detroit Mercy to a 3-0 week, a Legends Classic Subregional title and a road win at in-state rival Eastern Michigan – who was picked to win the MAC East.Â
- He averaged 32.7 points, 6.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals, while shooting 50.8 percent from the field (33-65), 63.2 percent from behind the arc (24-38) and 88.9 percent at the free throw line (8-9). PLAYING SOME D
- The Titan defense was a big reason it has won three in a row, especially in limiting teams from the outside.
