Antoine Davis registered a game-high 27 points as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 71-59, at Akron on Saturday.
Senior
Josh McFolley had 19 points and a season-high seven rebounds and junior
Lamar Hamrick added nine points and four boards.
Davis scored the first 13 points for Detroit Mercy (3-5) as the Titans had a five-point lead in the first half, 21-16, before entering the half tied at 25-25.
The Titans then had a 40-39 lead with 9:35 on the clock, but Akron (6-2) used a 14-2 run to jump out in front for good.Â
Freshmen
Marquis Moore and
Boe Nguidjol each had two points and pulled down a season-high six rebounds, while Hamrick and graduate senior
Derrien King had four caroms.Â
Detroit Mercy will be back in action next week with back-to-back games at Dayton (Dec. 4) and at Toledo (Dec. 5).Â
First Half:
- Davis started the game with a 3-pointer
- Davis continued to pace the offense scoring the first 13 points for Detroit Mercy as the red, white and blue led 13-12 at the 10:43 mark
- After some good defense, Hamrick extended the lead to 16-12 with a triple of his own with 8:47 left
- The Titans led by as many as five, 21-16, as Hamrick drilled another triple with 6:16 remaining
- The game would later be tied at 21-21 and 23-23 and again at 25-25 as McFolley drove to the rim for the layup with 30 seconds left and the defense forced another Akron miss at the buzzer
- The defense held the Zips to 34.5 percent shooting and forced seven turnovers, while limiting the rebounding margin to 20-19
Second Half:
- The game was tied at 27-27 and 29-29 until Akron scored five in a row for a 34-29 advantage at the 16:48 mark
- McFolley would later go on a 5-0 run with a layup and a free throw along with another layup to give the Titans a 37-36 lead with 13:10 left
- A layup by Moore and a free throw from Davis pushed the Titans ahead, 40-39, with 9:35 remaining
- Akron then went on a 14-2 run over the next three minutes to take control
- The Titans cut it to seven, 53-46, as Davis drove to the rim for a layup with 4:32 on the clock, but that was as close as the red, white and blue would get
Game Notes:
- Akron now leads the all-time series, 6-4, and is 4-1 against the Titans at home
- The game marked the fifth for Detroit Mercy against the Mid-American Conference on the season
- The Titans came into the game averaging 75.6 points
- Davis came into the game second in the nation in scoring at 30.0 points per game, while his 73 total field goals, 42 three-pointers, 6.0, 3-pointers per game and 210 total points all led Division I
- Davis has now tallied 20 or more in eight-straight games, the longest since Willie Green had 10 in a row in 2003
- McFolley's career high in rebounds is eight at Bowling Green in 2018
- Hamrick had just three 3-pointers entering the game, hitting two in the season opener alone at Western Michigan
- Moore scored his first collegiate points in the contest
