Detroit Mercy Hosts Cleveland State for Sunday Contest

DETROIT (12/29/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team returns to the court on Sunday, hosting Cleveland State for a 1 p.m. contest from Calihan Hall. All fans get into the game for just $1 and the contest may also be seen live via ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN Applications.

The Titans fell in their Horizon League opener on Friday despite a career-high 18 points from freshman guard Jess Bicknell. It's Dollar Sunday against the Vikings from Calihan Hall and in addition to all tickets just $1, all fans may purchase hot dogs and fountain pops for just $1.

• Head coach Bernard Scott is 4-3 all-time against a Cleveland State team that he spent five seasons coaching for from 2010-15. It's the 61st meeting all-time between the two programs with Detroit Mercy holding a 40-20 advantage, including a 23-6 mark in home games. Associate head coach Oties Epps also spent two stints on the coaching staff at Cleveland State.

• Freshman guard Jess Bicknell notched a new career-high with 18 points against Youngstown State. It was her fifth double-figure scoring effort of her freshman season.

• Zoey Oatis had three more steals against YSU. Oatis and freshman teammate Paige Bellman are tied for fourth in the Horizon League in steals per game (1.8).

• Detroit Mercy ranks fourth in the Horizon League in steals with 102 in 12 games (8.5 per game). The Titans have tallied nine or more steals in six of the past seven contests.

Last Time Out
Three Titans scored in double figures, led by freshman Jess Bicknell's career-best 18 points, but Detroit Mercy fell in its Horizon League opener to Youngstown State on Friday, 85-59. It was the third time in four seasons that the Titans have opened league play with YSU.

Bicknell was joined in double figures by classmate Sophia DiMilia, who had 11 points, and sophomore Lexey Tobel, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Detroit Mercy shot 43 percent from the floor and had 12 steals, with three each coming from Tobel and junior Zoey Oatis.

Titan freshman Alex Burr had the best game of her young career, sinking both field goal attempts and finishing the game with six points, three rebounds and one block. She is tied for the team lead with seven swats on the season.

Scouting Cleveland State
The Vikings are 4-8 on the season and opened Horizon League play with a 64-62 road triumph at Oakland on Friday. Cleveland State out-scored the Golden Grizzlies 21-8 in the third quarter. Mariah White led the Vikings with 22 points, while Mariah Miller and Savanna Crockett each added 16 points.

Miller ranks second in the Horizon League in scoring at 16.4 points per game. White (12.7 ppg) and Crockett (12.2 ppg) also average in double figures for CSU, while Crockett leads the conference in rebounding at 10.2 caroms per contest. Miller and Rachel Slaney also each average better than seven boards per game as CSU leads the HL in defensive rebounds per game (29.9). Crockett, a freshman, has seven double-doubles.

All-Time Series
The Titans hold a 40-20 all-time series advantage over Cleveland State, which includes a 23-6 mark at home. Detroit Mercy is 4-3 against the Vikings under head coach Bernard Scott.

Detroit Mercy dropped both meetings last season, but had gone 4-1 in the previous five matchups. The Titans are 6-2 in the past eight contests played in Calihan Hall.

Detroit Mercy returns to the road next weekend, but doesn't need to travel far, meeting Metro Series rival Oakland for the first time this season. The Titans play the Golden Grizzlies in a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Jan. 4 from the O'rena in Rochester.
