Titans Downed At UIC

CHICAGO (2/19/2018) -- Redshirt junior Kameron Chatman tallied a team-high 30 points, but a couple of UIC runs was the difference as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 94-87 contest to the Flames on Monday night. 

Chatman was 10-of-20 from the field and 4-of-8 from behind the arc, while also grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Josh McFolley posted 15 points with three rebounds and three assists and sophomore Corey Allen had 15 points.

Detroit Mercy (8-21, 4-12 HL) led early on by as many as 12 points, 27-15, but UIC (17-12, 12-4 HL) used a 19-3 run to take the lead and led at the break, 46-40.

The Titans jumped back in front a couple of times early in the second half, the latest at 58-57 with 14:53 left, but the Flames went on a 15-4 run to take the lead for good.

Graduate senior Roschon Prince added nine points and six rebounds and senior DeShawndre Black added nine points, five assists and three boards. 

The Titans shot 45.9 percent for the game with 10 triples and were 21-of-28 at the free throw line. 

Detroit Mercy will end the regular season with two games at home, starting with Milwaukee coming to town on Thursday, Feb. 22. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

First Half:
  • The Titans started the game on an 8-3 run in the first three minutes of action.
  • Detroit Mercy led 10-8 when it scored six-straight points, the last three coming from a triple by Black.
  • After a three-point play by UIC, a jumper by freshman Jermaine Jackson Jr., and a three from Chatman had the Titans ahead, 21-11, at the 12:11 mark.
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers by Allen later extended the Titan advantage to 12, 27-15, with 10:25 left.
  • UIC went on a 19-3 run over the next six minutes to take a 34-30 lead and led by as many as eight, 44-38, with just 1:14 left in the half.
  • Chatman had 13 points and four rebounds at the break, while the Titans shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27) with six 3-pointers and 11 assists on their 13 made baskets. 

Second Half:
  • The Titans started the second half on a 9-2 charge beginning with a McFolley three and ending with a McFolley layup for a 49-48 score. 
  • The lead went back and forth a couple of times after that, but a trey from Chatman put the red, white and blue out in front, 56-54, with 15:47 remaining.
  • The last time the Titans had the advantage was off two free throws by Prince to make it 58-57.
  • UIC went on a 15-4 run in the next four minutes to reclaim the lead at 72-62 at the 9:38 mark. 
  • UIC pushed its lead to as many as 17, 84-67, but the Titans never quit and went on a 15-5 spurt to pull within seven, 89-82, with just under two minutes remaining. 

Game Notes:
  • The Titans still lead the overall series, 31-19
  • It was the 13, 20-point game of the season for Chatman, the most by a Titan since Paris Bass had 13 in 2015-16
  • With his 15 points, McFolley is just 18 away from becoming the 41st Titan in school history to reach 1,000 career points
  • McFolley also connected on three 3-pointers tonight, giving him 158 in his career and passing Michael Jackson '95 for eighth in school history
  • Allen was in double figures for the 19th time in his 26 games
  • Black now has 35 assists and just 13 turnovers in his last 13 games
  • Senior Isaiah Jones made his first appearance in a month after dealing with an injury
