Nicole Urbanick became the career leader in made 3-pointers in University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball history Monday night, but the Titans fell to their rival Oakland on Senior Night from Calihan Hall, 85-74.
Urbanick buried the game's first bucket to become the all-time leader in triples in school history with 232 and added two more during the game to break the tie she held with former Titan standout Senee Shearer. Urbanick was one of four Titans in double figures Monday evening, scoring 15 points.
Sophomore guard
Anja Marinkovic scored a team-best 17 points, senior
Brianne Cohen had 16 points and sophomore Zoey Oatis added 13 points for the Titans. Detroit Mercy sank 10 3-pointers in the game -- eight combined from Marinkovic (five treys) and Urbanick (three triples).
Prior to the contest, Detroit Mercy honored its three seniors on Senior Night -- Cohen,
Cortney Williams and Urbanick. All three started the contest and Detroit Mercy came out on fire in the contest, scoring the first eight points of the game.
Urbanick sank a triple 54 seconds into the contest from the top of the key to give her the all-time record and put Detroit Mercy up 3-0. Cohen followed with buckets from the block, with the second bucket becoming an old-fashioned 3-point play. The Titans led 8-0 just 3:11 into the contest.
Oakland chipped away at the Titan advantage, but Marinkovic drilled a 3-pointer and Cohen and Oatis each scored in the final minute of the quarter as Detroit Mercy led after one stanza, 17-10.
The Titans upped their advantage to double digits, 26-16, by the 5:57 mark of the second quarter. Marinkovic sank another 3-pointer early in the second quarter and Urbanick scored four-straight points to close out a 9-4 run and force Oakland to call a timeout at Calihan Hall.
The Golden Grizzlies began to make their outside shots and knotted the game up, 30-30, with 3:23 left in the opening half. Freshman
Lexey Tobel, however, converted on a pair of free throws and junior
Lola Ristovski then followed with two free throws of her own late in the second. Sophomore
Ashley Miller scored an easy lay-up off a feed from Williams as Detroit Mercy led 36-33 late in second, but Oakland sank two 3-pointers in the final minute to grab a 39-36 halftime edge.
Detroit Mercy saw Oakland take a seven-point advantage early in the third, but came back and scored the next seven points to tie the game, 43-43, with 6:35 left in the quarter. Oatis scored the first bucket and Cohen then added a lay-up in the paint before Marinkovic sank a trey to complete the 7-0 run.
Oatis scored the final seven points of the third quarter -- including hitting a 3-pointer from the corner as time expired in the third as Detroit Mercy trailed by six, 58-52.
The visitors from Oakland took a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but Detroit Mercy wouldn't go away and twice brought the game to within five in the final stanza. Marinkovic and Urbanick each hit two 3-pointers in the first half of the fourth quarter, with Urbanick's second 3-pointer of the fourth bringing the Titans to within five points, 69-64, with 5:23 left.
After Tobel knocked down Detroit Mercy's 10th triple of the game with 3:26 left, Cohen converted on another 3-point play down low and Detroit Mercy trailed just 77-72 with 2:36 remaining. It would be as close as Detroit Mercy would get, however, with Oakland closing the game on a run to seal the victory.
Cohen was 7-of-10 from the floor on Senior Night, adding six rebounds and three blocks. Junior guard
Gracie Roberts had a career-high-tying nine rebounds for the Titans, while Urbanick had five assists for the second-straight contest to lead Detroit Mercy. Urbanick also had two blocks in the game.
The Titans shot 41.5 percent from the floor (27-for-65) and 10-of-31 from the downtown. Detroit Mercy also was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

• Cohen became the eighth player in school history to surpass the 1,400-point plateau; She is 17 points shy of seventh place on the career scoring list.
