Men’s Lacrosse Falls At Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (2/20/2018) -- Six Titans found the back of the net, but a fourth-quarter outburst by Jacksonville was too strong to overcome as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-8 game on the road at D.D. Milne Field on Tuesday night.

Detroit Mercy (1-2) was playing its second game in three days and was down just 9-8 after three periods when Jacksonville (2-2) tallied six goals in the final frame.

Freshman Brett Erskine had two goals and an assist and junior Matthew Vangalen scored two goals. Seniors Lucas Ducharme and Sean Birney, junior Patrick Walsh and freshman Brennan Kamish each had goals.

Senior Charlie Hayes recorded a season-high four caused turnovers and four ground balls and senior Will Kane had three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior Bo Pickens had four a career-best GB's and redshirt freshman Logan Shamblin made six saves.

The Titans started the day scoring first and also led at 4-3 and 5-4 in the second before the Dolphins took a 6-5 lead at the break.

Detroit Mercy was 15-of-17 on clears and caused 12 of Jacksonville's 18 turnovers.

The game featured 17 called penalties, but both teams did not take a lot of advantage with the man-up – including a couple of two-man advantages at times - as the Titans were 2-of-7, while Jacksonville was 2-of-6.

The Titans will be back in action this weekend as they host Marquette on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m. at Wisner Stadium in Pontiac. Tickets for that contest are set at $10 and can only be purchased on gameday at the door with cash or charge.

First Period:
  • Just like in its last game at Mercer, defense started the scoring as Hayes caused a turnover and that led to Vangalen scoring a little more than a minute into the contest.
  • The Titans were down 2-1 when sophomore Seth Mendell set up Erskine's first strike with 6:04 left.
  • Detroit Mercy was able to kill off a penalty after that and Shamblin made two saves as the Dolphins led 3-2 after 15 minutes.

Second Period:
  • Off a Shamblin save, Ducharme notched a goal despite taking a hit that led to a Jacksonville penalty.
  • The Titans had a three-man advantage at one point and Vangalen scored on the extra-man attack to give the red, white and blue a 4-3 lead.
  • Later on off another JU infraction, Erskine located Walsh and he beat the keeper with the man-up to push the Titans ahead, 5-4.
  • Jacksonville was then able to net the final two goals for a 6-5 score at the break.

Third Period:
  • Jacksonville ran its lead to 8-5 before Kamish caused a turnover and then tallied a goal with 8:07 left in the period.
  • Detroit Mercy pulled within one at 8-7 as Birney fed Erskine and he fired one in at the 6:34 mark.
  • The Dolphins went ahead 9-7, but off a caused turnover by Kane, sophomore Connor Bennardo was able to find Birney and he beat the goalie with just 22 seconds remaining to make it a 9-8 contest.

Fourth Period:
  • The Dolphins scored three goals in the first three minutes to take control of the game.
  • It looked as though the Titans were going to get on the board as Hayes forced a turnover and then Jacksonville was hit with a pair of one-minute penalties, but the Titans just could not find the back of the net.
  • Jacksonville ended the game with three-straight goals.

Game Notes:
  • The Titans trail the all-time series, 3-2
  • The first four games were decided by two goals or less, with three by one goal
  • Hayes is now fifth in school history passing John Dwyer '13 with 42 career caused turnovers
  • Kane is now ninth in school history with 27 caused turnovers
  • Shamblin has 27 saves in his first three games
