McFolley, Prince Both Top 30 As Titans Drop High-Scoring Affair

DETROIT (2/24/2018) -- Junior Josh McFolley poured in a career-high 34 points and graduate senior Roschon Prince tallied a career-best 32 points with 10 rebounds as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team lost a high-scoring game to Green Bay, 107-97, on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.

It was the second time this season the Titans had two players post 30 points in a game. 

It was also Senior Day as the Titans honored their four-member senior class prior to the game in DeShawndre Black, Jaleel Hogan, Isaiah Jones and Prince.
 
With the outcome, the Titans now know their opponent for Motor City Madness as they will be the 10th seed and face seventh-seeded Green Bay next Friday, March 2, at 5:30 p.m. in the Little Caesars Horizon League men's basketball championship in downtown Detroit at LCA.
 
Prince's 10 rebounds gave him his third double-double of the year and he also had two assists and two steals. McFolley was 13-of-21 from the field and 6-of-11 from behind the arc to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. He scored the first 12 Titan points and during that spurt, he became the 42nd player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.
 
Green Bay (12-19, 7-11 HL) had a five-point lead at 27-22 with 10:52 left in the first half when the Phoenix went on a 21-8 run to open a double-digit advantage.
 
Detroit Mercy (8-23, 4-14 HL) trailed at the break at 61-36 and by as many as 29 in the second half, but went on an explosive run late to cut the deficit to just eight before time ran out.
 
Redshirt junior Kameron Chatman finished with 11 points and four assists, while Black added eight points, five rebounds and a team-high five assists. Sophomore Cole Long tallied six points, seven boards and three helpers.

The Titans shot 50.0 percent from the field (36-of-72) with 20 assists and were 16-of-19 (84.2%) at the line. The red, white and blue also had the edge on the boards, 37-33, and forced 13 turnovers.

First Half:
  • Green Bay had an early edge, 7-2, but McFolley came out hot scoring the Titans first 12 points as the team trailed 16-12 a little more than four minutes into the game.
  • Chatman's first basket got the team within two, 16-14, but the Phoenix did not give up the lead and led 24-17 at the 12:56 mark.
  • The Titans were within five, 27-22, with 10:52 remaining, but Green Bay went on a 21-8 run over the next six minutes to take a 48-30 advantage. 
  • From there, the Phoenix took a 61-36 lead at the break.
  • McFolley had 19 points at the half going 8-of-12 from the field with three 3-pointers, while Prince had eight points and two boards. 

Second Half:
  • Green Bay netted the first four points for a 29-point lead early in the frame.
  • Detroit Mercy started to cut into the deficit with a 10-2 spurt as McFolley have five of those points.
  • McFolley and Prince kept the offense going, but the Titans were down 96-69 with 8:17 left.
  • That is when the red, white and blue started to take control going on a 16-2 hot streak over the next four minutes and getting with 13, 98-85, with 4:14 left.
  • Five Titans scored in that run with Long netting five points as his triple made it a 98-85 contest.
  • Prince had seven points down the stretch as his layup had the team down just eight, 105-97 with 15 ticks on the clock. 

Game Notes:
  • The Titans trail the all-time series, 30-25
  • It was the fifth time this season the Titans have finished at 50.0 percent or high in field goal percentage
  • Detroit Mercy came into the game connecting on 75.8 percent at the line, second in the HL and 37th in the country
  • The other game on the season where the Titans had a pair of players with 30 in a game was in Jan 12's win over Youngstown State as Corey Allen had 34 and Jermaine Jackson Jr. had 32.
  • The 25 field goals by the Titans was the most since knocking in 51 against Siena Heights earlier this season. 
  • McFolley also passed five Titans on the day and is now 38th in school history with 1,027 points, 32 shy of Larry Salci '68 for 37th
  • McFolley is the second Titan to score 1,000 points this season as Hogan accomplished the task at Fort Wayne
  • It was the 11th time in McFolley's career that he has had 20 or more in a game
  • McFolley's six 3-pointers were a season high and the most since he had a career-best eight against Youngstown State last season
  • With his two steals, McFolley passed current assistant coach Jermaine Jackson '99 for sole possession of 10th place in the school record books with 144 career steals
  • Prince's career high was 25 as a member of Long Beach State last season at Cal Poly
  • Prince had double-doubles at Milwaukee (11 pts., 10 rebs.) and at Oakland (10 pts., 13 rebs.)
  • Long has pulled down at least five rebounds in five of the last eight games
  • Black now has 40 assists and just 18 turnovers in the last 15 games
