Titans Win A Pair In The Bronx In Last Weekend Before Conference Play Begins

BRONX, NY (3/18/2018) - The University of Detroit Mercy softball team went 2-2 in the Bronx this weekend, winning a pair on Saturday and dropping the next two on Sunday.

Across all four games, the Titans high powered offense was led by Jordan Manno with six hits (one double), one run scored, and four RBI, while Skylar Fairchild registered two runs scored, two hits (one double), and one RBI. Kori Keyes had a career weekend with four hits, three RBI, one double and two runs scored, and Kara Vitale added a run, two doubles and three RBI.

Detroit Mercy 8 - UMass Lowell 5
UMass Lowell struck early in the bottom of the first, taking a 1-0 lead. The Titans would immediately bounce back, scoring six runs in the top of the second inning.

Savvy Ferstle would lead off the inning with a double to right center field. She would then advance to third base on a passed ball. Fairchild would draw a walk and steal second base, putting two runners in scoring position.

Vitale would reach on a fielder's choice, scoring Ferstle and advancing Fairchild to third base. Alyssa Lang would follow that up with a single to the pitcher, advancing Vitale to second.

Sydney Pollock would then walk in a run, giving her an RBI and giving the Titans a 2-1 lead. Jordan Manno would follow that up with a single down the first base line, driving in two runs and giving the Titans a 4-1 lead.

Courtney Gilbert would then single down the third base line, driving in one run, and a throwing error would allow another run to score for the Titans, giving them a 6-1 lead.

UMass Lowell would add a run in the third and fourth, cutting the deficit to 6-3.

Then, in the top of the sixth, the Titans would extend their lead, courtesy of a two-run double from Manno, giving the Titans an 8-3 lead.

UMass Lowell would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the red, white and blue would prove to be too much for the River Hawks, winning by a final score of 8-5.

Detroit Mercy 9 - Seton Hall 6
This time the Titans would strike first, gaining a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Fairchild would bomb a double to right field, and Keyes would single, driving in the runner and putting the Titans on the board.

The Pirates would answer immediately, tacking on a pair in the bottom of the second and giving them their first lead of the game, 2-1.

Seton Hall would add on another run in the bottom of the fourth, giving them a 3-1 lead.

The red, white and blue would explode in the top of the sixth, scoring seven runs and taking an 8-3 lead.

Pollock and Gilbert would hit back-to-back singles and Fairchild would reach on an error by the pitcher, loading the bases for Keyes, who would drive in a run with a bunt single and keep the bases loaded.

Lang would then reach first base on a fielding error, scoring another run for the Titans, tying the game at 3-3. Vitale would then bomb a double into left center, giving her two RBI and regaining the lead for the red, white and blue, 5-3.

Cami Sinclair would reach first base on a bunt single, again loading the bases, this time for Manno. She would ground out to second base, but successfully drive in a run, extending the lead to 6-3.

Pollock would walk and Gilbert would reach on a fielding error, allowing two unearned runs to score for the Titans, capping off their seven-run inning, and giving them an 8-3 lead.

In the top of the seventh Keyes would double to left center and Vitale would then drive her in with a double to left center of her own, giving the red, white and blue a 9-3 lead.

The Pirates would try to rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs, but the Titans would shut down the comeback, winning the game by a score of 9-6.

Detroit Mercy 0 - Fordham 21
It was not the Titans day in the opener as the host Fordham Rams jumped on Detroit Mercy early en route to a victory.

Detroit Mercy 4 - Holy Cross 6
Holy Cross gained the lead in the top of the first 1-0, courtesy of an RBI single into left field.

The red, white and blue would again immediately answer, this time with three runs in the bottom of the first. Manno doubled to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pollock walked and stole second, putting two runners in scoring position, followed by a Gilbert walk, loading the bases.

Fairchild singled to center field, driving in one run and tying the game, 1-1. Keyes then singled through the left side for an RBI and a 2-1 Titans lead. Vitale hit a sacrifice fly to left field, giving the Titans a 3-1 lead.

Holy Cross regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a three-run outburst, giving them a 4-3 lead.

Detroit Mercy again answered immediately, when Pollock walked, stole second and then scored on a fielding error, tying the game 4-4.

No winner could be decided in seven innings so the game would need to go to extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Holy Cross would hit a 2-run home run, giving them the lead 6-4.

The Titans were unable to comeback in the bottom half of the eighth, dropping a hard-fought game, 6-4 to the Crusaders.

ON DECK
The Titans will return to the state of Michigan this week for a pair of away games against Eastern Michigan University on March 21st, and then they will open conference play against UIC this weekend, March 23-24.
