Hayes, Shamblin Lead The Way As Titan Defense Suffocates Knights

PONTIAC, Mich. (3/2/2018) – Senior midfielder Charlie Hayes tallied a career-high six caused turnovers with six ground balls and redshirt freshman Logan Shamblin made 14 saves as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team bested Bellarmine, 11-5, on Friday afternoon.

It was the first game of the Midwest Classic, hosted by Detroit Mercy at Wisner Stadium.

The six turnovers by Hayes were the most by a Titan since Jamie Hebden set a school record with seven against VMI in 2013. The 14 saves by Shamblin were a season-high for the rookie netminder as he posted double-digit saves for the third time this year.

Senior Alec Gilhooly posted his third career hat trick with three goals and sophomore Seth Mendell and freshman Brennan Kamish finished with two apiece. Senior Sean Birney and junior Matthew Vangalen each had a goal and an assist.

The Titans (2-3) started strong with five goals in the first period and led 6-1 at the half. Detroit Mercy never let up taking an 8-3 advantage after three periods.

Detroit Mercy outshot Bellarmine (1-4), 35-26, had more ground balls (37-25) and saw the Knights commit 20 turnovers with the defense credited with 12 takeaways. The red, white and blue were also a perfect 22-of-22 on clears.

Senior Pat Masterson had a caused turnover and a ground ball. Sophomore Alex Akins scooped up four GB's and freshman Brett Erskine had a season-high six.

The Titans will return to action on Sunday, March 4, as they conclude the Midwest Classic against nationally-ranked Ohio State.

First Period:
  • The Titans struck just a couple of minutes into the game as off a Bellarmine turnover, freshman Ryan Figueiras picked up his first collegiate point feeding Kamish and falling down, he unleashed a shot to the back of the net.
  • A little more than a minute later, Figueiras set up Vangalen and it was 2-0 at the 11:08 mark.
  • Kamish then posted his second goal of the period with 9:37 on the clock.
  • The Titan defense kept Bellarmine off the board and off a Shamblin save, the ball made its way to Gilhooly and he beat the keeper for a 4-0 lead with 5:40 left.
  • The final goal came as the Titan killed a penalty and with another Shamblin save, Detroit Mercy was on the clear and Birney located Gilhooly and he put one in with 38 seconds remaining for the 5-0 advantage.

Second Period:
  • Bellarmine scored early in the period and it was a 5-1 game until the 6:09 mark when Mendell tickled the twine.
  • Hayes had three caused turnovers in the second period and Shamblin had four saves as the Titans took the 6-1 lead into the break.

Third Period:
  • It was 6-2 when the Knights' goalie made a save, but Mendell got the ground ball and fired one in the net for a 7-2 game with 9:10 left.
  • Hayes caused another turnover at the 8:53 mark.
  • With 2:52 left, junior San Horton had the caused turnover and junior Emmett Green picked up the ground ball and he then beat the goalie for an 8-3 lead with 2:24 on the scoreboard.

Fourth Period:
  • The Titans peppered Bellarmine with a couple of shots and then Gilhooly was able to put one inbetween the pipes for a 9-3 lead with 11:37 remaining.
  • The Titans added another goal off a faceoff win as Birney tallied a marker for a 10-4 lead.
  • A Shamblin save led to a fast-break opportunity and Hayes found senior Lucas Ducharme and he scored to make it an 11-5 game with 2:45 left.
