KENNESAW, Ga. (3/2/18) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team opened its spring break trip with a pair of setbacks to Kennesaw State on Friday afternoon.
On the day, junior
Jordan Manno had two runs scored, three hits, one double and a RBI. Fellow junior
Courtney Gilbert had, four hits a RBI and scored a run. Senior
Savvy Ferstle collected three hits and one RBI, while sophomore
Skylar Fairchild had two hits and a RBI.
Detroit Mercy 1 - Kennesaw State 9
The Titans would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior
Jordan Manno would single up the middle for the first Titan hit of the game. Junior
Kori Keyes would then draw a walk, advancing Manno to second base, and that would bring junior
Courtney Gilbert to the plate. She got the Titans on the board with a single up the middle, scoring Manno.
The Owls would then answer in the bottom of the third, scoring one run of their own, before adding another run in the bottom of the fourth. The red, white and blue would try to mount a comeback in the fifth, with hits coming from
Elizabeth Yager and Manno, but the comeback would fall short.
The Owls would tack on three runs in the fifth and four in the fifth, giving them the 9-1 victory over the Titans in game one.
Ashley Mauser started on the mound for the Titans and went 4.2 innings, scattering nine hits, five earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts, giving her the loss for game one.
Detroit Mercy 5 - Kennesaw State 11
The Owls got hot early, scoring three in the first and four in the second, giving them a 7-0 lead after two innings.Â
The Titans would look to mount a rally in the top of the fifth. Freshman
Maddy Scarsella would single to left field to lead off the inning. Manno would then crank a double into right field, driving Scarsella in and putting the Titans on the scoreboard.
Keyes would then get hit by a pitch, and Gilbert would single to left field, loading the bases for Ferstle. She would single through the left side on a 0-2 count, scoring Manno.
Fairchild followed with a single of her own, scoring Keyes and Gilbert and cutting the deficit to 9-4.
Ferstle would then advance to third on an
Alyssa Lang foul out to the first base line, allowing her to score an unearned run on a fielding error, pulling the Titans within four, 9-5.
However, the Owls would get back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth and sixth, extending their lead to 11-5, proving too much for the Titans' furious comeback.
Liz Murphy would take the loss for the Titans in the second game of the doubleheader against Kennesaw State.
Lindsay Brandon pitched well in relief scattering four hits, two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts across those three innings in the circle.Â
