Old Foes, Midwest Rivals & Power 5 Schools Highlight @DetroitMBB Non-Conference Schedule

DETROIT (8/3/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will have a challenging non-conference schedule with nine road games, including trips to California, Temple, Butler and Xavier, as well as hosting the Legends Classic subregional as part of the 2018-19 docket that was released today.

"I feel this is a good mix of games for our non-conference schedule," said head coach Mike Davis. "We have some home games, we play some bigger programs on the road and we also have a lot of games that are close so our fans can come and watch us play."

In total, the Titans will have four home games out of their 13 non-conference match-ups. The known opponents posted a 205-190 record (51.8%) last season, and four teams made the postseason with NCAA appearances by Butler and Xavier, a NIT team in Temple and one CIT opponent in Eastern Michigan.

The Legends Classic schedule was already announced as the Titans will play at Temple (Nov. 9) and at Cal (Nov. 15) on the road, while welcoming Loyola Maryland, Bowling Green and Hampton to Calihan Hall for the home opener and subregional classic from Nov. 19-20.

Coach Davis will make his official Detroit Mercy coaching debut on Nov. 6 as the 113th Titan season will start at Western Michigan. That will be one of two games against in-state rivals with the Titans visiting Eastern Michigan on Nov. 24.

Detroit Mercy will also renew a couple of series against old conference foes with games on the road at Butler (Nov. 12), at Dayton (Dec. 4) and at Xavier (Dec. 21). Butler and Detroit Mercy played together in the MCC and Horizon League, while Dayton and Xavier were in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

The remaining four games are all against Mid-American Conference programs as Kent State (Nov. 28) and Ohio (Dec. 15) will come to the Motor City, while the red, white and blue will travel to Akron (Dec. 1) and Toledo (Dec. 5).

Season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by contacting Director of Ticket Operations & Sales Justin Hairston at 313-993-1700 ext. 7301 or by email at hairstjj1@udmercy.edu.

Non-Conference Titan Nuggets:
  • The Titans have played every team on their schedule, except Hampton, a possible opponent in the second day of the Legends Classic subregional.
  • The last time the Titans played Butler was in the 2011-12 campaign and Detroit Mercy swept both games that year beating the Bulldogs, 76-65, at home and, 65-61, at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
  • Detroit Mercy last played Xavier in 2006 and this year's meeting will be the 95th match-up, second-most in Titan history trailing only the 121 career contests against Loyola Chicago. The Titans are 43-51 all-time against the Musketeers.
  • Detroit Mercy owns a 58-18 mark against Eastern Michigan, with the 58 wins against the Eagles the most in Titan history over any opponent.
  • Detroit Mercy's last game against Dayton was on the road in the 2002 NIT.
  • This will be the third career meeting between Detroit Mercy and the Cal Bears with the first coming in 1938 and the last on the road in 2009 as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
  • This will be the third career meeting against Temple with the last coming in the Gotham Classic in 2013 – a game that was played in Philadelphia in late February due to a weather postponement – and the 1969 Motor City Classic where a nationally-ranked Titan team defeated the eventual NIT champions, 87-76, with Spencer Haywood tallying 32 points and 26 rebounds.
  • The last time the Titans played back-to-back non-conference games that were not part of an in-season tournament was in 2013 when they played at Bowling Green on Dec. 22 and hosted Indiana Tech on Dec. 23.
