Smokey Gaines To Be Inducted Into Detroit Public High School Hall Of Fame

DETROIT (9/14/2018) -- Former Titan head coach Dave "Smokey" Gaines earned another tremendous honor as he will be inducted into the Detroit Sports Zone High School Hall Of Fame.

The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Bert's Warehouse Theatre (2739 Russell Street, Detroit, MI) starting at 6:00 p.m., which includes a dinner.

Gaines came to the University in 1973 as a part time assistant coach under Dick Vitale and was promoted to a full-time position just a year later, helping build the Titans into a national power. In his final season as an assistant coach, the Titans went 25-4 with a win in the NCAA Tournament over Middle Tennessee State before falling to Michigan.

After Vitale stepped down from the head coaching position, Gaines took over and guided the program to another 25-4 mark in 1978 with a trip to the NIT, and a 22-6 record in 1979 with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

A legend in the Motor City, he was an All-State selection in 1959 at Northeastern High School.
