Titans Fall at IUPUI on Friday

INDIANAPOLIS (1/11/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball squad dropped a road game Friday morning, falling 82-47 at IUPUI. The Jaguars were hosting their inaugural Kid's Day game from the Jungle and had 728 fans in attendance.

Junior Zoey Oatis led the Titans with 11 points and had four steals. Senior guard Brittney Jackson and freshman guard Jiera Shears each added nine points, while junior Ashley Miller had a team-high six rebounds for Detroit Mercy.

Jess Bicknell, making her third career start and first since Dec. 9, scored the first three Titan points in the first quarter after Miller opened the game with a block on the very first possession. Macee Williams helped IUPUI get out to an early lead, scoring 10 first-quarter points as Detroit Mercy trailed after one, 19-9.

Oatis tallied the first five points in the second stanza, converting on a jumper and lay-up and then adding a free throw, but at the halftime break IUPUI held a 39-16 advantage. Williams had 17 of her game-high 19 points in the first half for IUPUI, while Oatis led the Titans with seven points at the break.

The Jaguars used a run early in the third quarter to take a big lead over the Titans. Detroit Mercy hit 7-of-15 shots in the third quarter (46.7 percent) with Miller (five points) and freshman Alex Burr (four points) combining for nine points. The red, white and blue scored 16 points in the third and 15 more in the fourth quarter, but were unable to cut into the first-half deficit.

Shears scored all nine of her points in the second half, going 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Burr tied her career-high with five rebounds in the game, adding one block for the Titans.

Detroit Mercy had five blocks overall in the contest -- two of them from freshman Sophia DiMilia. Jackson went 7-of-8 from the free throw line for the Titans, which shot 20-of-31 overall from the foul line.

The Titans also had nine steals, the ninth time this season that the red, white and blue have swiped nine or more balls in a game. Detroit Mercy entered Friday's contest fourth in the Horizon League in steals per game (8.5).

Macee Williams led IUPUI (9-7, 3-2 Horizon League) in scoring with 19 points, sinking 8-of-9 shots.

• Senior guard Brittney Jackson played in game No. 100 in her Titan career.
• It was Oatis' ninth game of the season of multiple steals and third game of four or more thefts. She has multiple steals in all four league games.
• Oatis entered the game leading the Titans and tied-for-third in the Horizon League in steals per game (1.8).
• Oatis has 29 steals on the season, just one behind her career-high of 30, when she led the squad in steals in 2017-18.
• Oatis also scored in double figures for the seventh time this season.
• Detroit Mercy had nine steals -- its ninth game of the season with nine or more steals in a game.
• Burr has at least one block in seven contests in the 2018-19 campaign.
• Jackson went over 600 career points in the contest, while Oatis surpassed 300 career points.
• It was the third career meeting between the two programs in women's basketball (IUPUI leads, 3-0).
