Titans Back in Action Sunday in Chicago Against Flames

CHICAGO, Ill. (1/12/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team is back in action in Chicago on Sunday, visiting Horizon League foe UIC for a 1 p.m. ET contest and 12 p.m. local time game. The game may be seen live via ESPN-Plus for a monthly subscription fee.

The Titans are looking for their first Horizon League win of the 2018-19 season, while UIC is coming off its first league win on Friday, defeating Oakland in overtime.

• It's the 54th meeting between the two programs, with Detroit Mercy holding a 29-24 series advantage all-time. The Titans won both meetings last season, winning 61-58 on the road and 73-60 at home on Feb. 15, 2018.

• Junior Zoey Oatis continued her strong season on the defensive end, tallying four steals at IUPUI on Friday. She ranks third in the HL in steals (29) and fourth in steals per game (1.9).

• Junior Ashley Miller recorded her first career double-double at Oakland on Jan. 4, totaling 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was the third double-double by a Titan this season.

• Senior guard Brittney Jackson needs just one 3-pointer for 100 in her Titan career. She would become the 16th player in school history to reach 100 triples. She has 99 treys in 100 career games.

Last Time Out
Junior Zoey Oatis had a team-high 11 points and added four steals for her ninth multiple-steal game of 2018-19, but the Titans dropped an 82-47 league game at IUPUI on Friday. It was Oatis' seventh game scoring in double figures this season.

Detroit Mercy had nine steals in the contest, also the ninth game this season with nine or more thefts as the squad ranks fourth in the Horizon League in steals per game at 8.6. Guards Brittney Jackson and Jiera Shears each added nine points for Detroit Mercy against the Jaguars.

Junior forward Ashley Miller had six points and six rebounds, while freshman forward Alex Burr tied her career-high with five rebounds. Freshman Sophia DiMilia added two blocks for the Titans, which finished with five blocks in the contest.

Titan Thievery
The Titans have 100 steals in the past 10 games -- swiping a season-high 16 against Omaha at home on Nov. 29. Detroit Mercy has tallied seven games of 10 or more steals this season:

Zoey Oatis (fourth, 1.9 spg) and Paige Bellman (ninth, 1.5 spg) each rank in the top-10 in the HL in steals per game -- Oatis also has two games of five steals (vs. Omaha, at BGSU). Six players overall have 10 or more steals this season -- Oatis (29), Bellman (23), DiMilia (16), Bicknell (13), Jackson (11) and Miller (10).

Scouting UIC
UIC earned its first Horizon League victory of the 2018-19 season on Friday, picking up a 69-65 overtime victory over Oakland at home. Three Flames were in double figures, led by Kiarra Thompson's 17 points. Jada Nneji added 15 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks. Overall on the season, UIC is 3-13 and 1-4 in Horizon League in head coach Tasha Pointer's first season at the helm.

Guard Brittany Byrd leads the Flames and ranks third in the Horizon League in scoring at 15.7 points per game. Byrd also leads the team in reboudning, grabbing 6.4 per game. Nneji, a sophomore, leads the Horizon League with 37 blocks, tallying 2.3 swats per contest. As a squad, UIC is just ahead of the Titans in steals per game at 8.9, while the Flames also rank third in blocks, averaging 3.9 per contest.

All-Time Series
The Titans hold a 29-24 series advantage all-time over UIC, which includes a 10-12 mark in road games. The Titans won both meetings against the Flames last season, including winning at UIC. The Titans earned a thrilling 61-58 victory over the Flames on Jan. 13, exactly one year ago from Sunday's game.

Detroit Mercy is 4-2 under head coach Bernard Scott, including 2-1 on the road.

Detroit Mercy returns home next weekend, hosting Green Bay on Friday and Milwaukee on Sunday from Calihan Hall. Friday's game is set for 7 p.m. on Dick Vitale Court, while Sunday's contest is slated for a 1 p.m. tip-off. Admission into both games is $5 for adults.
