DETROIT (1/20/2019) -- Senior guard
Brittney Jackson tied her career-high with 16 points and the Titans battled with Milwaukee, pulling to within three points in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers used hot shooting from deep late to pull away in a 62-44 win from Calihan Hall.
Junior
Zoey Oatis added 12 points and a team-best six rebounds for the Titans, while freshman guard
Jess Bicknell had eight points and three steals.
The Titans, which trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, chipped away at the Milwaukee lead, using a 10-0 run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter to get Detroit Mercy to within one possession at 42-39 with 5:59 left. After a
Jiera Shears' jumper in the final minute of the third quarter, Jackson scored off the fast break to bring the Titans to within nine, 42-33, early in the fourth quarter.
Freshman
Paige Bellman then added a free throw before Jackson scored five-straight points -- the first off a 3-pointer jumper and then the next time down after a Jackson steal, the senior guard from Brooklyn, N.Y. sank another long jumper, this time just inside the 3-point arc. Her two buckets trimmed the Milwaukee lead to 42-39.
Milwaukee's Sydney Levy -- who made seven 3-pointers in the game -- countered with a 3-pointer with 5:24 left as the Panthers sank four 3-pointers in the final 6 minutes of the contest, three of them by Levy, who scored a game-high 23 points.
The Titans played Milwaukee tough in the first half, hitting their first two shots of the game -- both from outside the 3-point arc -- as Jackson's and Oatis' 3-point shots gave Detroit Mercy a quick 6-2 lead just 58 seconds into the game. Bicknell followed with a pair of jumpers in the first quarter as Detroit Mercy trailed 11-10 after one quarter.
Detroit Mercy continued to frustrate the Milwaukee offense in the second stanza, holding the Panthers to just 22 points in the first half. Detroit Mercy took a 17-15 lead midway through the first quarter as Bicknell scored off another jumper and
Ashley Miller and Oatis each added buckets for the Titans. Jackson tied the game 21-21 just before halftime before Milwaukee split a pair from the free throw line with 15 seconds left before the half to take a one-point advantage after 20 minutes.
The Titans shot 30.6 percent as a team in the game (15-for-49 on field goals) and connected on 11-of-18 shots from the free throw line. Detroit Mercy had nine steals in the contest -- three of them by Bicknell and two more from Jackson. Milwaukee out-rebounded the Titans in the game, 46-24.
Levy led Milwaukee (9-9, 4-3 HL) with 23 points, while Akaylah Hayes added 14 points and nine rebounds.
