INDIANAPOLIS (1/7/19) -- After a glorious week that saw him attack one school record and set another, University of Detroit Mercy guard
Antoine Davis was named the Horizon League Player and Freshman of the Week on Monday.
It is the second time this season he has swept both accolades as he has five Freshman of the Week honors and a pair of outright Player of the Week laurels to his name so far on the year.
The rookie averaged 40.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists, while shooting 58.3 percent overall (28-of-48), 54.1 percent from three (13-of-24) and 92.3 percent at the free throw line (12-of-13) last week as Detroit Mercy moved to 3-1 to start Horizon League play.
He poured in 48 points with six rebounds in the win over defending Horizon League Champion and preseason favorite Wright State and tallied another 33 points, while pulling down five boards with three assists against 2017 HL NCAA representative and the team picked second in the league this year in Northern Kentucky.
His 48 points was one shy of the school record as he was a season-best 15-of-24 from the field and tied his own school record hitting 10-of-15 from behind the arc. The 48 points is also the third-highest scoring outburst in NCAA Division I this year, and the most against a Division I opponent, and the fourth most in Horizon League history in conference play.
Against the Norse, he tallied 33 points -- 21 in the first half -- going 13-of-24 shooting with three more 3-pointers and corralling five rebounds. He also broke the school freshman record for 3-pointers in that game as he has 81 on the year, seventh in school history, and leading the nation.
Davis is now second in the nation in the country in scoring at 27.3 ppg. He now has 11, 20-point games, seven 30+ performances and a pair of 40-point efforts in his first 16 collegiate games and is pursuing the NCAA freshman 3-point record of 122 by Stephen Curry in 2006-07.
Davis and the Titans will continue their homestand this week as the red, white and blue host Green Bay on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m., and Milwaukee on Saturday at 1 p.m.
