Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Titans Can't Take Advantage Of Wright State Miscue

DETROIT (10/19/2019) -- The University of Detroit women's soccer team found the back of the net on a miscue by Wright State, but could not take advantage of the mistake as the Titans dropped a 3-1 home contest to the Raiders on Saturday night.

The Titans (2-10-2, 0-5-1 HL) were able to score on an own goal as the Wright State (9-3-2, 4-2-0) goalie failed to play a backward pass and the ball trickled into the net.

Detroit Mercy trailed 1-0 when that play happened early in the second. Wright State scored just a few minutes into the game on a penalty kick and then added two second-half markers.

Sophomore Cece Muskovac made three saves in net and sophomore Haily Wentzloff led the offense with four shots.

The red, white and blue will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to Cleveland State for a 7 p.m. match time.

First Period:
  • Wright State was awarded a penalty kick as a player was fouled in the box just 2:13 into the match and scored on that attempt
  • Off a corner kick, freshman Allessandra Pontoni had a shot go high at 6:33
  • Sophomore Julie Ann Piechocki had a shot saved in the 13th minute
  • The Titans had another corner in the 19th minute, but Wentzloff's header was wide
  • Junior Kelli Doyle had a shot saved in the 24th minute, while another of her attempts was blocked off a corner kick at 31:01
  • Wentzloff had a shot blocked from reaching the net at 32:10
  • Miuskovac made her first save just a couple of minutes later

Second Period:
  • Wentzloff had a shot saved in the 49th minute, but as Wright State was trying to clear the ball, it was misplayed by the goalie and the Titans scored on the own goal
  • Muskovac made a save after that and the Titans had two shots, but could not find the back of the net
  • Wright State took the lead back at 55:27 and added another goal at 69:23
  • Junior Rachel Russo's header was wide in the 77th minute
  • The Titans had a corner kick in the 81st minute but could not get a shot on net

Game Notes:
  • Wright State leads the all-time series, 15-12-5
  • The loss means the Titans can only finish as high as fifth in the Horizon League standings this season
