Women's Soccer Edged At Cleveland State

CLEVELAND (10/23/2019) -- Despite some strong defense, the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on the road to Cleveland State on Wednesday night.

The Titans (2-11-2, 0-6-1 HL) had some early calls go against them as Cleveland State (5-7-3, 3-3-1 HL) was awarded a pair of penalty kicks in the game, with sophomore Cece Muskovac stopping one before the Vikings scored on the PK in the 28th minute.

Muskovac ended the contest with three saves, while junior Kelli Doyle and sophomore Julie Ann Piechocki each recorded three shots.

The Titans and Vikings each had 12 shots and four corner kicks in the game.

Detroit Mercy will be back in action on Sunday when the Titans travel back to Ohio to face Youngstown State.

First Period:
  • CSU was awarded a penalty kick in the ninth minute that was saved by Muskovac
  • The Titans had a corner kick at 24:17 and the header by Doyle was saved
  • The Vikings got another penalty kick in the 28th minute and converted this opportunity
  • The Titans had a couple of looks on net as junior Olivia Parra had a shot saved at 36:43 and senior Casey Couturier's attempt was stopped just a minute later
  • Sophomore Hailey Wentzloff had a shot sail wide in the 40th minute

Second Period:
  • Senior Rachel Russo fired a shot wide at 47:55 and a couple of minutes later, Detroit Mercy had two corner kicks, one which saw Wentzloff get a boot that went high at 51:54
  • Piechocki had a shot on net saved at 59:03
  • Muskovac came up with another save in the 60th minute and at 72:05
  • Piechocki had a boot on net, but was denied in the 85th minute

On The Pitch:
  • The Titans still lead the all-time series, 10-6-2, but are now 2-6-2 all-time at CSU and has not won a game there since upsetting the Vikings, 2-1, in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinals in 2010
  • Muskovac now has 42 saves on the year
  • The loss eliminates the Titans from postseason play
