DETROIT (10/9/2019) -- Sophomore
Hailey Wentzloff gave the Titans an early lead, but a goal in the second half was the difference as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team fell, 2-1, at Oakland in a #MetroSeries battle on Wednesday night.
Wentzloff - who wears the number four - scored the Detroit Mercy (2-8-2, 0-3-1 HL) goal at 4:44 in the first to give the red, white and blue a 1-0 advantage as she took a pass from sophomore
Julie Ann Piechocki and beat the keeper to the left side of the net.Â
Oakland (4-5-2, 2-1-1 HL) responded a little more than two minutes later and added its second marker in the 72nd minute.
Sophomore
Cece Muskovac made three saves in net for the Titans, who allowed just nine shots in the game.
Detroit Mercy will return to action on Saturday in a Titan doubleheader as the women host UIC on Saturday at 3 p.m. and the men square off against NKU at 7 p.m.Â
First Period:
- Muskovac made a diving save in the opening minute
- At 4:44, Wentzloff took a pass from Piechocki and fired a shot to the left side of the net to beat the keeper
- Oakland was able to tie it just two minutes later
- The Titans had a corner kick that did not result in a shot in the 17th minute
- Freshmen Stephanie Maniaci had a shot that was saved in the 23rd minute
- Oakland had two shots the rest of the way that were not on net
Second Period:
- Muskovac made a save at 51:47 to keep the game tied at 1-1
- Oakland had a corner kick in the 58th minute and the shot that came was wide
- At 68:01, Oakland had a shot blocked that resulted in a corner kick, but the defense did not allow a shot off that
- The Titans saw the Golden Grizzlies take the lead at 71:49 as the rival took control of a rebound and booted it in
- Muskovac made her third save in the 81st minute
Game Notes:
- The Titans now trail the all-time series, 15-7-2, including 2-8-2 on the road
- Detroit Mercy and Oakland branded an annual rivalry called the Metro Series in 2013, which will be awarded to the school with the most head-to-head victories over the course of the academic year
- Wentzloff scored her first goal since the season opener
- Piechocki now has eight assists on the season
