Antoine Davis scored a game-high 28 points and sophomore
Boe Nguidjol grabbed a game and career-high nine rebounds as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped an 84-65 decision at North Carolina State in the 2019-20 season opener.
Davis also added six rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Nguidjol had two blocks and scored six points. Senior
Justin Miller added nine points and sophomore
Chris Brandon had eight points, three rebounds and two assists.
The Titans shot 40.0 percent from the field and won the battle of the glass, 40-33, while holding NC State to 10-of-29 from the outside with 11 turnovers.
Sophomore
Willy Isiani landed a 3-pointer to start the scoring for the Titans and Davis added another after that for a 6-3 lead, but NC State (1-1) went on a 10-0 run after that. Later on, a triple by Rose Jr., had the red, white and blue within four, 15-11, at the 13:29 mark, but that was as close as the Titans would get.
Rose Jr., ended with five points and four rebounds and sophomore
Marquis Moore tallied four points, four boards and two assists.
Detroit Mercy was an uncharacteristic 5-of-25 from outside the arc and 12-of-20 at the free-throw line.
The Titans will be back in action in one week as they head back to ACC country to face Clemson next Sunday, Nov. 17.
First Half
- Isiani opened up the scoring with a triple just 30 seconds in
- Davis came back a minute later (18:50) for a 3-pointer
- A steal at 15:35 by sophomore Alonde LeGrand amped the Titans to a jumper by Davis
- Davis with another assist to Rose Jr. as he drilled a triple to get the team within four at 15-11
- Brandon eluded the defense for a dunk at 10:08 moving to make it 25-18
- Brandon set up Davis for a triple to make it 28-21 with nine minutes left
- Nguidjol had an offensive rebound and putback at 7:10
- Brandon then crashed the glass for an offensive rebound and layup to make it an 11-point deficit at 47-26 with just over four minutes to go
- Rose Jr., followed his own miss with an offensive rebound and jumper to again pull the team within 11 at 39-28
- Miller made his first basket on a jumper with 2:25 left to again cut it to 11, 41-30
Second Half
- Moore found Davis for a good jumper early in the period
- Moore hit LeGrand with the assist for a layup in transition at 18:29
- Off of a defensive rebound in, Davis hit a jumper for his 17th point to make it 51-36
- Miller then started to get the offensive looks and a couple of baskets and free throws made it 58-43 with 11:52 remaining
- Davis had back-to-back baskets, grabbing an offensive board on the last one to make it 67-49 with under seven minutes left
- Davis fed a cutting Brandon with a layup at 4:59 to get the Titans within 15
- Nguidjol hit his first collegiate triple at 2:04
- A jumper by Davis had the Titans trailing by 14, 77-63 with 1:28 left
Game Notes:
- Detroit Mercy now trails the all-time series, 3-0
- The Titans won the rebounding total just seven times last year and their season high margin was +7 in a win over Loyola Maryland
- Detroit Mercy's five triples were the fewest since going 5-of-26 against Milwaukee on Feb. 28, 2018
- It was the 24th career 20-point game for Davis
- Davis has now scored in double figures in all 31 of his collegiate games
- Nguidjol had six rebounds three times last season
