Davis Earns John R. Wooden Award Nomination

LOS ANGELES (11/5/2019) -- The sophomore year of Antoine Davis has already been filled with accolades - and the games have not even started yet - as the University of Detroit Mercy high-scoring guard was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list.

The Wooden Award, presented annually to the outstanding collegiate basketball Player of the Year, was founded in 1976.

Davis has already been the Horizon League's Preseason Player of the Year and was named to the 20-man Jerry West Shooting Guard Watch List by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He has already seen his name rank among the best in college basketball this season as ESPN ranked him #17, Sports Illustrated #50, CBS Sports #54 and NBC Sports #63.

Off his outstanding freshman campaign, that saw him break the NCAA freshmen record, held by Stephen Curry, with 132, 3-pointers, finish third in the nation with 26.1 points per game and record 784 points for second in school history, one away from the school record, a HL freshman record and the fourth-most in league history.

The John R. Wooden Award Preseason Committee begins the selection process in October of the year preceding the Wooden Award announcement. The committee evaluates players to determine the Women's Preseason Top 30 and the Men's Preseason Top 50.

In mid-January, the committee whittles the list down to the Mid-Season Top 25 candidates for the men and women. Players who do not make the Preseason or Mid-Season lists are still eligible for consideration for the final ballot.

The Award's blue-ribbon National Advisory Board selects the ballot of approximately 15 candidates for the Player of the Year and All American Team honors. These candidates must be full-time students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher throughout their college career coupled with outstanding contributions to team play and citizenship are mandatory for selection. The candidates are announced prior to the NCAA Tournament and are listed on the ballot, which is sent to the Wooden Award voters.

Coach John Wooden's ideas of the "total basketball player" inspired the design of the John R. Wooden Award trophy. The trophy features five figures, each depicting one of the five major skills of the "total" basketball player: rebounding, passing, defense, shooting and dribbling.

The culmination of more than two dozen meetings and the efforts of numerous people is a trophy that is presented each year to the collegiate basketball Player of the Year and his school. Permanent trophies reside in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Amateur Athletic Foundation in Los Angeles, California. A special trophy stands on a marble pedestal in a niche, especially designed for it in the Main Lobby of the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

The Titans will open their season on Sunday when they visit NC State.
