Davis Named To Third National Watch List In The Lute Olson Award

BOSTON (11/6/2019) -- The 2019-20 Lute Olson Award preseason Watch List was announced on Wednesday and once again, University of Detroit Mercy sophomore Antoine Davis saw his name among the contenders.

The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player.

The award is the third major watch list that the nation's leading returning scorer is on following the Jerry West Award for the nation's top shooting guard and the John R. Wooden Award for the outstanding collegiate basketball Player of the Year.

Davis ended his freshman year third in the nation and leading the Horizon League in scoring at 26.1 points per game, just the fifth Titan to lead the league in scoring and the first freshman in conference history to accomplish that feat, and is the top returning scorer in at Division I this year.

Along the way last season, he broke the NCAA freshman record of Stephen Curry with 132, 3-pointers, while recording  784 total points, second in school history and one away from the school record, a HL freshman record and the fourth-most in league history. He was also eighth in the Horizon League with 3.6 assists per game and his 107 assists on the season was the most by a Titan since Ray McCallum in 2012-13.

The award is named in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson, who won 776 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch, he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997.

The 2019-20 Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award will be announced in April 2020 in Atlanta, GA, site of the men's Division I NCAA Basketball Championship.
