EAST LANSING, Mich. (11/8/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team made its first road trip of the season Friday evening, falling on the road 110-52 against No. 17/21-ranked Michigan State from the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
It was the first game against a top-25 opponent since the Titans played No. 22/21 Green Bay in the final game of the 2017-18 regular season.
Titan sophomore forward
Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) scored a career-high 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while freshman guard
Annika Corcoran (Chardon, Ohio / Gilmour Academy) added nine points. Freshman guards
Sylare Starks (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead) and
Markyia McCormick (Pickerington, Ohio / Canal Winchester) each chipped in eight for the red, white and blue. The Titans went to the free-throw line 32 times in the contest, sinking 18 free throws.
Starks nailed two 3-pointers in the first quarter, while Moore had two early buckets for the Titans. Moore scored on Detroit Mercy's first offensive possession, receiving a pass from Oatis and converting a wide-open lay-up after setting a pick and rolling to the bucket. Corcoran drove often to the basket in the first half and made six free throws in the opening 20 minutes of the contest.
Moore led Detroit Mercy in the first half with seven points, while Starks and Corcoran each had six points for the red, white and blue in the opening half. Freshman guard
Abbie McDowell swished a 3-pointer from the wing in the final minute of the second quarter. The Titans shot 39.1 percent (9-of-23) in the first half and had six offensive rebounds, but also had 19 turnovers resulting in 24 MSU points.
Corcoran, who got to the line often and attempted 13 free throws in the game, sank three more free throws in the third quarter, with McCormick adding a pair from the charity stripe. Moore scored five points in the third quarter and added a free throw early in the fourth quarter to reach her career-high 13 points, scoring off a pick-and-roll play early in the third and then making a step-back triple with the ball bouncing around the rim several times before going down.
Detroit Mercy had 30 turnovers in the contest overall and had six steals and two blocks. Detroit Mercy shot 32-percent in the game (15-for-46) and 56-percent from the free throw line.
Michigan State (2-0) had five players in double figures led by Alyza Winston's 17 points.

• Moore scored in double figures for the third time in her career and first as a Titan after scoring 11 points twice last season for Western Michigan.
• McCormick scored eight points for the second-straight contest.
• Corcoran's 13 free-throw attempts were the most for a Titan in a game since Brianne Cohen attempted 13 on Nov. 24, 2017, against North Texas.
• It was the 29th meeting in women's basketball between the two schools (MSU leads, 22-7).
• Detroit Mercy was visiting the Spartans at the Breslin Center for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
• The Titans opened a four-game road stretch in Friday's matchup with MSU.
