Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Titans Break Milwaukee's Heart On Valentine's Day

MILWAUKEE (2/14/2019) -- The Titans got down early, but with a strong second half on defense and crashing the glass, the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team came back to defeat Milwaukee on the road, 90-84, on Thursday night.

The game was an important one for positioning in the Horizon League Championships as Detroit Mercy moved to 10-16 overall and 7-7 in the conference, while Milwaukee fell to 9-17, 4-9 in the league.

Freshman Antoine Davis led the way with 27 points, along with four rebounds and four assists. He nailed five 3-pointers in the game, pushing his total to 113 on the year, third in NCAA history by a freshman trailing only Oklahoma's Trae Young's 118 last year and Davidson's Stephen Curry's 122 in 2006-07.

Senior Josh McFolley had 22 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, as he is now tied for the school record with 195 career steals.

Junior Harrison Curry had 15 points and four rebounds and freshman Marquis Moore pulled down a season-best 11 rebounds, 10 in the second half.

Detroit Mercy had an early lead, but Milwaukee surged ahead to take an eight-point advantage on a couple of occasions in the first half.  Back came the Titans as a late run at the end of the stanza sent the team into the break down by just two, 46-44.

The Titans then found themselves down by seven, 61-54, with 13:47 left when the red, white and blue started to chip away and take the lead. They tied it at 63-63 with 10:40 remaining and upped the lead to as many as 10 in the period.

Graduate senior Derrien King posted 12 points - 10 in the second half - and graduate senior Jacob Holland had five early points.

The Titans made a season-best 31 free throws on 38 attempts (81.6%), including 13-of-16 in the final five minutes. They also had just 11 turnovers and shot 44.4 percent from the field with 11, 3-pointers.

Detroit Mercy will now get ready for Green Bay on Saturday in a 1 p.m. (EST) set at the Resch Center.

First Half:
  • Holland had five early points and his triple gave the Titans an 8-4 lead
  • Despite a couple of early 3-pointers from Davis and McFolley, Milwaukee took a 28-20 lead midway through the period, crashing the glass to the tune of a 13-2 margin
  • The Panthers led by eight at 30-22 when the Titans started to chip away as Davis buried a three and McFolley hit two free throws at the 7:49 mark
  • Milwaukee would get up by seven a couple of times down the stretch, but a three by Davis made it 43-29 with 3:23 left
  • The Titans then ended the half on a 5-0 run as McFolley had a trifecta and two free throws by Curry got the squad to 46-44 at the break as neither team scored in the final 2:16

Second Half:
  • The Titans continued their first-half run with four-straight points by Curry as they took a 48-46 lead with 19:01 on the clock
  • The lead didn't last long as Milwaukee came back and took a seven-point lead three times, the latest at 61-54 with 13:47 left
  • Detroit Mercy went on a 6-0 run as King, McFolley and Davis all had baskets, and they later took their first lead since 10-9 as two free throws by Davis made it 64-63 at the 10:40 mark
  • A triple by Davis and a free throw from senior Gerald Blackshear Jr. pushed the lead to five, 68-63, with under 10 minutes to go
  • The Titans also had a five-point lead at 75-70 as King drilled one from behind the arc with 5:56 remaining
  • The red, white and blue would continue to increase its lead as two free throws by Moore made it 79-72 at 4:13 and then 81-72 with two free throws by McFolley inside four minutes
  • The line was kind to the Titans as freshman Boe Nguidjol hit two from the line to give Detroit Mercy a double-digit lead at 86-76 with 39 seconds on the clock
